  1. 1. A Waterborne Colloidal Model System Consisting of Fluorinated Spheres Bearing Grafted PEG: Synthesis, Characterization and Properties

    Author : Jeanette Ulama; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; colloidal model system; steric stabilization; core-shell; poly ethylene glycol PEG ; heptafluorobutyl methactylate HFBMA ; fluorinated; polymer; phase behavior; short-range attractions; semi-batch emulsion polymerization; small angle X-ray scattering SAXS ; smearing effects; dynamic light scattering DLS ; cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy cryo-TEM ;

    Abstract : Model systems have expanded our knowledge of numerous phenomena in Colloid Science, such as the appearance of glasses, order-disorder transitions involving crystals and attraction induced formation of gels. So far, the existing colloidal model systems have been limited mainly to nonaqueous media. READ MORE

  2. 2. Quantum mechanical effects on charge transport in two mesoscopic systems

    Author : Gustav Sonne; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nanoelectromechanical systems; NEMS; carbon nanotubes; carbon peapods; excess current; superconducting weak links; suspended carbon nanotubes; non-linear resonances;

    Abstract : Carbon nanotubes are one of the most promising building blocks for the developing field of nanoelectromechanics. Due to their unique electronic and mechanical properties, these all-carbon systems have been suggested for a range of applications where one wishes to utilse the coupling between mechanical and electronic degrees of freedom on the nanometer length scale. 3. 3. Effects of peripheral auditory adaptation on the discrimination of speech sounds

    Author : Francisco Lacerda; Hartmut Traunmüller; Olle Engstrand; Björn Lindblom; Louis Pols; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Adaptation; discrimination; categorical perception; Phonetics; Fonetik; Phonetics; fonetik;

    Abstract : This study investigates perceptual effects of discharge rate adaptation in the auditory-nerve fibers. Discrimination tests showed that brief synthetic stimuli with stationary formants and periodic source were better discriminated when they had an abrupt as opposed to a gradual onset (non-adapted vs adapted condition). 4. 4. Influence of grinding operations on surface integrity and chloride induced stress corrosion cracking of stainless steels

    Author : Nian Zhou; Rachel Pettersson; Ru Lin Peng; Clara Anghel; Per-Lennart Osk Larsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Kemi; Chemistry; Steel Forming and Surface Engineering;

    Abstract : Stainless steels were developed in the early 20th century and are used where both the mechanical properties of steels and corrosion resistance are required. There is continuous research to allow stainless steel components to be produced in a more economical way and be used in more harsh environments. READ MORE

  5. 5. Magnetic and Structural Properties of f-electron Systems from First Principles Theory

    Author : Torbjörn Björkman; Olle Eriksson; Thomas Schulthess; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Fysik; Materialvetenskap; Materials Science;

    Abstract : A series of studies of f-electron systems based on density functional theory methods have been performed.  The focus of the studies has been on magnetic and structural properties, as well as investigating ways to handle strong electron correlation in these systems. READ MORE
