  1. 1. Biological importance of cytomegalovirus infection in health and disease : profound effects of infection on monocyte and smooth muscle cell function

    Author : Sara Gredmark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cytomegalovirus; monocyte macrophage; dendritic cell; cellular differentiation; latency; atherosclerosis; smooth muscle cells;

    Abstract : Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a herpesvirus. Following a primary infection, HCMV persists in the body in a latent form and most adults are virus carriers. Infection and reactivation of HCMV occur in inummocompromised patients causing severe disease and appear to be the result of inflammatory processes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on mechanisms in liver fibrosis

    Author : Nils Kinnman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bile duct epithelial cell; chernotaxis; cholestasis; cystic fibrosis; cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator; endothelin; hepatic stellate cell; hepatitis C virus; liver fibrosis; platelet-derived growth factor; platelet-derived growth factor receptor [beta]; smooth muscle [alpha]-actin; transforming growth factor- [beta]; tumor necrosis factor-[alpha];

    Abstract : The aim of the present study was to elucidate mechanisms involved in liver fibrogenesis, the wound healing response of the liver to chronic injury. A role for TNF-[alpha] and all three isoforms of TGF-[beta] in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C related liver disease was suggested by the finding of increased expression of TGF-[beta]1-3, latent TGF-[beta] binding protein (LTBP), and TNF-[alpha] by immunohistochemistry in areas of inflammation and fibrosis in liver tissue from untreated patients with hepatitis C.
