1. Variability and adaptation in the contractile system of smooth muscle
Abstract : This thesis examines the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the large diversity of the contractile properties in smooth muscle. Six studies, I-VI, are included. I: a slow smooth muscle (aorta) has a different nucleotide and phosphate dependence compared to a fast type (taenia coli). READ MORE

2. Regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase - Consequences in experimental models of bladder disease
Abstract : Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression is associated with various pathophysiological conditions in the lower urinary tract. The aims of this thesis have been to investigate the regulation of iNOS in bladder smooth muscle cells and the consequences on neuromuscular regulation, cell growth and differentiation. READ MORE

3. Function of contractile and cytoskeletal proteins in smooth muscle: Effects of hypertrophy and age and desmin removal in a transgenic animal
Abstract : In man, the urinary bladder responds to an urinary outflow obstruction with a pronounced dilatation and growth of the bladder wall. This clinical situation can be mimicked in rat by creation of a partial urinary outflow obstruction and the papers included in the present thesis use this animal model to address questions regarding the adaptive changes in the smooth muscle of the growing bladder. 4. Cell signaling and regulation of smooth muscle contraction from a physiological and a pathophysiological perspective
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to examine the cell signaling and regulation of smooth muscle in different smooth muscle tissues and under pathophysiological conditions. The thesis is based on 4 papers and the experimental work is based on in vitro studies in mouse. READ MORE
