16. A genomic approach to smooth muscle differentiation and diversity
Abstract : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are a broad class of contractile cells that are found in a number of organs systems, including the vasculature, the urogenital system, the bronchi and the gastrointestinal tract. The two main functions exerted by SMCs are to provide contractile force and to synthesize structural components of the extracellular matrix. READ MORE

17. Modulation of the calcium-force relationship in smooth muscle by polyamines and metabolic inhibition
Abstract : The relationship between intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) and force in smooth muscle was investigated in receptor-coupled permeabilized preparations and by fluorimetry of the calcium indicator Fura 2 in intact smooth muscle. The time integral of spontaneous [Ca2+]i transients in the intact rat portal vein was decreased by cyanide and, during tonic contraction, cyanide reduced force without changing [Ca2+]i implying metabolic sensitivity of both membrane excitation and [Ca2+]i - activation of the contractile proteins. 18. lnvestigating intestinal smooth muscle dysfunction in the 6-OHDA rat model of Parkinson's disease
Abstract : The neurodegenerative progression of the nigrostriatal pathway in Parkinson’s disease (PD) entails the appearance of motor and nonmotor symptoms. Nonmotor symptoms are common, having a negative impact on the quality of life of patients living with PD. READ MORE

19. Calcium channel activity and force regulation in smooth muscle: Effects of polyamines and growth stimulation
Abstract : The initial signal for contraction in smooth muscle is an increase in [Ca2+]i. Ca2+ ions can either enter the cytosol from the extracellular medium or be released from intracellular stores. Voltage-operated Ca2+ channels (VOC) play a dominant role in the activation of smooth muscle contraction. READ MORE

20. Developmental origin and molecular regulation of vascular smooth muscle cells
Abstract : Several pathologies of the vascular system have been suggested to be dependent on the smooth muscle cells (SMCs) that build up the vessel wall. Aortic SMCs have been proposed to derive from lateral plate mesoderm. READ MORE
