  1. 1. Spatial distribution of snow in Antarctica and other glacier studies using ground-penetrating radar

    Author : Cecilia Richardson-Näslund; Robert W. Jacobel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; GPR; ground-penetrating radar; radar soundings; snow accumulation; accumulation rate; spatial variability; Antarctica; Dronning Maud Land; cold surface layer; thermal regime; glacial cirques; Sweden; Antarktis; Glaciärer; Ackumulering av snö; Geography; Physical Geography; geografi med naturgeografisk inriktning;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis is to develop and exemplify the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) within the field of glaciology. The main focus is on the spatial distribution of snow in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. READ MORE

  2. 2. Climatology and firn processes in the lower accumulation area of the Greenland ice sheet

    Author : Charalampos Charalampidis; Veijo Pohjola; Dirk van As; Rickard Pettersson; Douglas Benn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; climate change; Greenland ice sheet; accumulation area; automatic weather stations; surface energy balance; melt–albedo feedback; surface mass budget; snow; firn; meltwater; percolation; refreezing; runoff;

    Abstract : The Greenland ice sheet is the largest Northern Hemisphere store of fresh water, and it is responding rapidly to the warming climate. In situ observations document the changing ice sheet properties in the lower accumulation area, Southwest Greenland. READ MORE

  3. 3. Brash Ice and Level Ice Growth, Effects of Snow

    Author : Vasiola Zhaka; Andrzej Cwirzen; Kaj Riska; Robert Ettema; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; brash ice growth; level ice growth; snow effects; slush; snow ice; macroporosity; piece size distribution; Byggmaterial; Building Materials;

    Abstract : Brash ice occurs due to frequent navigation in ice-infested waters, typically along established navigation tracks regularly maintained by icebreakers and harbors. The accumulation and consolidation of brash ice between two ship passages are influenced by meteorological factors including the cumulative freezing air temperatures, and the mechanical processes such as ice-breaking due to ship passages. 4. 4. Subsurface fluxes of mass and energy at the accumulation zone of Lomonosovfonna ice cap, Svalbard

    Author : Sergey Marchenko; Veijo Pohjola; Rickard Pettersson; Carleen Reijmer; Thomas Schuler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glacier; ice sheet; sea level; runoff; ice; firn; snow; stratigraphy; density; core; radar; thermistor; temperature; preferential water flow; thermal conductivity; water content; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot naturgeografi; Earth Science with specialization in Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Glaciers cover ca 10% of the Earth's land and are found in the high altitudes and latitudes. They are important components of environmental systems due to the multiple feedbacks linking them with the atmosphere, hydrosphere and periglacial landscapes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ground freeze-thaw, snow and roads in northern Sweden

    Author : Maria Sarady; Eva Sahlin; Magnus Bohlin; Hanna Ridefelt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Ground freeze-thaw; snow depth; roads; northern Sweden; geography; Geography; Geografi;

    Abstract : In this thesis freeze-thaw along roads in northern Sweden is examined. The examinations are put in a context of changing climate and its amplification towards the Arctic region on earth. The research focuses on the impact of a warmer climate on ground freeze-thaw and in exten- sion road maintenance in the region. READ MORE
