  1. 26. On the analytical engagement of social semiotics and variation theory in physics education research

    Author : Moa Eriksson; Nationellt Resurscentrum för Fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Social semiotics; Variation theory; Relevance structure; Dimensions of variation; Semiotic resources; Fysicumarkivet A:2020:Eriksson;

    Abstract : In this licentiate thesis, I explore how two theoretical frameworks—social semiotics and the variation theory of learning—used in physics education research, can be fruitfully combined to obtain additional analytical tools for analysing student learning in introductory level university physics. Each theoretical framework has on their own, or together with other frameworks, been successfully applied for analysing both individual and collective learning, but the combination of the two has yet not been fully explored.     Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Antibiotics; Policy; Medical Sociology; Actor-Network Theory; Human-microbial relations; Antimicrobial Resistance; Everyday Infections; Material semiotics; Medical sociology; Medical objects; Medical technologies; Medical knowledge; Sociologi; Sociology;

    Abstract : Rational use of antibiotics–using antibiotics only when needed and in the right way–is a prioritized goal in policy aimed at preventing antimicrobial resistance. A vast body of research is devoted to understanding why unnecessary antibiotics are prescribed. READ MORE

  3. 28. Children's Gestures from 18 to 30 Months

    Author : Mats Andrén; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; children; gesture; development; communication; language; action; semiotics; social cognition;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the nature of the gestures performed by five Swedish children. The children are followed from 18 to 30 months of age: an age range which is characterized by a rapid succession of developmental changes in children's abilities to communicate by means of both spoken language and gesture. 4. 29. Using a Social Semiotic Perspective to Inform the Teaching and Learning of Physics

    Author : Tobias Fredlund; Cedric Linder; David Wolfe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Social semiotics; semiotic resources; physics education research; interactive engagement; disciplinary affordance; disciplinary-relevant aspects; patterns of disciplinary-relevant aspects; the Variation Theory of Learning; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This thesis examines meaning-making in three different areas of undergraduate physics: the refraction of light; electric circuits; and, electric potential and electric potential energy. In order to do this, a social semiotic perspective was constituted for the thesis to facilitate the analysis of meaning-making in terms of the semiotic resources that are typically used in the teaching and learning of physics.
