  1. 1. Modifying kraft pulping to produce a softwood pulp requiring less energy in tissue paper production

    Author : Hafizur Rahman; Per Engstrand; Mikael E. Lindström; Louise Logenius; Peter Sandström; Ulf Germgård; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : Modifying kraft pulp; tissue dewatering; polysulfide; sodium borohydride; tensile index; hemicellulose;

    Abstract : Modification of softwood kraft pulp by the addition of either polysulfide (PS) or sodium borohydride (NaBH4) has been shown to increase the pulp yield due to a higher retention of glucomannan.  The pulps with higher yield gave a paper with higher tensile index than reference pulp, especially at lower degrees of refining. 2. 2. Pretreatment and Enzymatic Treatment of Spruce : A functional designed wood components separation for a future biorefinery

    Author : Yan Wang; Gunnar Henriksson; Mikael E. Lindström; Hans Theliander; Martin Lawoko; Adriaan van Heiningen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kraft cooking; extended impregnation; enzymes; chemo-enzymatic separation process; peeling reaction; sodium borohydride; polysulfide; anthraquinone; sodium dithionite; mild steam explosion; biorefinery.; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : The three main components of wood, namely, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, can be used in various areas. However, since lignin covalently crosslinks with wood polysaccharides creating networks that is an obstacle for extraction, direct extraction of different wood components in high yield is not an easy matter. 3. 3. Biorefining of lignocellulose : Detoxification of inhibitory hydrolysates and potential utilization of residual streams for production of enzymes

    Author : Adnan Cavka; Leif J. Jönsson; John N. Saddler; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Lignocellulosic biomass is a renewable resource that can be utilized for the production of biofuels, chemicals, and bio-based materials. Biochemical conversion of lignocellulose to advanced biofuels, such as cellulosic ethanol, is generally performed through microbial fermentation of sugars generated by thermochemical pretreatment of the biomass followed by an enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose. 4. 4. Aspects of optimizing pulp fibre properties for tissue and packaging materials

    Author : Hafizur Rahman; Armando Cordova; Per Engstrand; Börje Norlin; Göran Bengtsson; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : To improve the competitive advantages of pulp fibre-based materials for tissue and packaging over fossil-based products, it is essential to increase knowledge of the selectivity of the cooking and the chemimechanical processes by optimizing the unit operations of impregnation, cooking and refining. A general goal in pulping processes is to achieve as efficient and even fibre separation as possible. READ MORE

  5. 5. Immunocytochemical visualization of cathepsin D during oxidative stress

    Author : Karin Roberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Cathepsin D is the major aspartic protease in lysosomes, and it is found in almost all animal cells. In the present studies, a pre-embedding immunocytochemical method was used to visualize cathepsin D in cultured cells. The protein can be detected at both light and electron microscopic levels by neutral-pH silver enhancement of ultrasmall (0. READ MORE
