  1. 1. The hidden half of the meadow : Interactions between drought, soil carbon, roots and soil microbial communities

    Author : Daniela Guasconi; Gustaf Hugelius; Sara Cousins; Stefano Manzoni; Petra Fransson; David Johnson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; soil; soil carbon; soil ecology; roots; root traits; microbial communities; grasslands; climate change; drought; land management; compost; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : Soil is a hidden ecosystem which harbours plant roots and countless microorganisms, vital for sustaining life aboveground. These belowground communities provide essential ecosystem services like soil stabilisation and organic matter decomposition. READ MORE

  2. 2. Assessing Soil Functions for Sustainable Remediation of Contaminated Sites

    Author : Yevheniya Volchko; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; soil ecosystem services; Contaminated sites soil; minimum data set; remediation; sustainability assessment; soil quality indicators; soil functions;

    Abstract : Soil contamination is a worldwide problem. Soil remediation is often carried out to reduce the risks posed by contaminants in the soil to human health and environment. Contaminant concentration is typically the only soil quality aspect maintained in remediation projects. READ MORE

  3. 3. Revisiting push-pull technology: Below and aboveground mechanisms for ecosystem services

    Author : Aneth Bella David; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Push-pull technology is an effective and ecological solution to suppressing major Lepidopteran pests of cereals, in particular stem-borers (Busseola fusca, Chilo partellus), the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) and the parasitic weed Striga. The technology exploits plant-insect interactions in intercropping practices to manage the pests, increasing productivity while maintaining ecosystem resilience. READ MORE

  4. 4. Linking Landscapes and Livelihoods : Ecosystem services as a lens in Sudano-Sahelian West Africa

    Author : Hanna Sinare; Line Gordon; Anders Malmer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecosystem services; landscapes; livelihoods; agroforestry; Sudano-Sahel; West Africa; Natural Resources Management; naturresurshushållning;

    Abstract : Integrated landscape approaches are increasingly called for to reconcile multiple objectives from the perspectives of agriculture, forestry, poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation. Sudano-Sahelian West Africa with low agricultural productivity and widespread poverty is a hotspot for these issues and has attracted international interest in interventions to improve livelihoods. 5. 5. Opportunity Windows and Added Value of Gentle Remediation Options for Contaminated Land Management

    Author : Paul Drenning; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sustainable and Risk-Based Land Management SRBLM ; Ecosystem services; Soil health; Phytomanagement; Soil functions; Cost-benefit analysis; Gentle remediation options GRO ;

    Abstract : Well-functioning, healthy soils are increasingly recognized as vital to human well-being, but soil contamination impairs the capacity of soils to perform their essential functions and provide humans with ecosystem services (ES). Contaminated land poses risks to human health and the environment, which must be managed, but also constitute an important and underutilized land and soil resource for providing ES in urban areas through phytomanagement with gentle remediation options (GRO) – nature-based solutions using plants, fungi, bacteria, and soil amendments to manage risks at contaminated sites while also improving soil functionality.
