  1. 1. The soil as a source material in archaeology. : Theoretical considerations and pragmatic applications

    Author : Johan Linderholm; Roger Engelmark; Martin Bell; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Environmental archaeology; Geoarchaeology; Prehistory; Soil phosphate; Magnetic susceptibility; Soil chemistry; Site formation processes; Soil erosion; Archaeology subjects; Arkeologiämnen; Archaeology; arkeologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with questions on various applications using soils and sediments as sources of information in archaeological research. Human environmental impact on soils and sediments, in terms of pollution, is a well known phenomenon as the industrialisation intensified during historical times and onwards and has left strong pollutive marks. 2. 2. Analysis of PAHs and their transformations products in contaminated soil and remedial processes

    Author : Staffan Lundstedt; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental chemistry; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; PAHs; degredation; transformation; formation; accumulation; oxidation products; metabolites; oxogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; oxy-PAHs; soil; gasworks; remediation; bioremediation; bioslurry; wood-rotting fungi; Fenton´s reagent; avaliability; bioavaliability; chemical analysis; extraction; pressurized liquid extraction; PLE; accelerated solvent extraction; ASE; Miljökemi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; analytisk kemi; Analytical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Soil that is heavily contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is often found at the sites of former gasworks and wood-impregnation plants. Since PAHs are toxic these sites represent a hazard to human health and the environment, and therefore they need to be treated, preferably by a method that destroys the contaminants, and thus eliminates the problem permanently. 3. 3. High-resolution mapping and spatial variability of soil organic carbon storage in permafrost environments

    Author : Matthias Benjamin Siewert; Gustaf Hugelius; Peter Kuhry; Iain Hartley; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; carbon; soil organic carbon; permafrost; soil; land cover classification; digital soil mapping; machine-learning; ecosystem; mapping; landscape studies; Siberia; Arctic; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Large amounts of carbon are stored in soils of the northern circumpolar permafrost region. High-resolution mapping of this soil organic carbon (SOC) is important to better understand and predict local to global scale carbon dynamics. READ MORE

  4. 4. Remediation of mercury polluted soil

    Author : Thomas Lifvergren; Bert Allard; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : soil pollution; soil remediaion; mercury; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Enviromental Science; Miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Mercury in contaminated soil constitutes a wide spectrum of species with highly different properties due to the chemical complexity of the element. Assessments of risk, ecological effects and removal potential require process and mobility studies. READ MORE

  5. 5. Soil-Steel Composite Bridges : Research advances and application

    Author : Amer Wadi; Raid Karoumi; Lars Pettersson; Ian D. Moore; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Flexible culvert; Soil‒steel composite bridge; Sloping terrain; Swedish design method; Finite element model; Ultimate capacity; Avalanche load; Failure load; Low soil cover; Failure mechanism; Long-span; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Abstract : Soil-steel composite bridges are considered competitive structures being an economical alternative to similar span concrete bridges. This frequently stimulates practitioners to push their design limits and expand the different areas of application including their performance in sloping terrain. READ MORE
