    Abstract : This doctoral thesis deals with the stabilization of fine-grained soils using by-product originated hydraulic binders. The use of fine-grained soils as subsoil for infrastructure projects is often limited because of the risk for instability. READ MORE

  2. 2. Laboratory Investigations of Frost Action Mechanisms in Soils

    Author : Deniz Dagli; Jan Laue; Tommy Edeskär; Lukas Arenson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Cold Regions Soil Mechanics; Frost Action; Frost Depth; Frost Heave; Heat Flow in Soils; Ice Lens Formation; Image Analysis; Laboratory Freezing Test; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : Phase change of the water in the soil skeleton under cold climate conditions (also known as frost action in soils) affects soil properties and can be responsible for serious alterations in a soil body; causing damages (due to the volumetric expansion known as frost heave) to structures on or below the ground surface such as foundations, roads, railways, retaining walls and pipelines, etc. In order to improve the current design methods for roads against frost action, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has initiated a research program. 3. 3. Frost modelling and pavement temperatures : summer pavement temperaures and frost modelling

    Author : Åke Hermansson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Soil Mechanics; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : Three papers form the present thesis. In paper I a numerical model for calculation of surface temperatures on a highway is presented. The model takes all relevant factors into consideration, i.e. READ MORE

  4. 4. Spring water stress in Scots pine: interaction of snow and soil temperature

    Author : Per-Erik Mellander; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Low temperature; soil warming; transpiration; root water uptake; carbon dioxide assimilation; soil frost; silvicultural practice; Pinus Sylvestris; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Water use and net carbon assimilation during spring was examined on Scots pine trees exposed to different soil warming dynamics in the field. Sap flow, needle water potential and net carbon assimilation were measured on trees that were exposed to a wide range of soil temperature regimes caused by manipulating the snow cover on tree-scale soil plots.
