  1. 1. Bed filters for phosphorus removal in on-site wastewater treatment : Removal mechanisms and sustainability

    Author : David Eveborn; Jon Petter Gustafsson; Gunno Renman; Erik Kärrman; Lars Lövgren; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; On-site wastewater treatment; Eutrophication; Environmental impact assessment; Phosphorus removal mechanisms; Soil infiltration; Reactive bed filters; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik; Water engineering; Vattenteknik; Soil chemistry; Markkemi;

    Abstract : For many surface waters, phosphorus (P) leaching is a serious problem that should be minimized to prevent eutrophication. In Sweden there is a demand for physical and technical development of high-performance P removal techniques to reduce phosphorus leaching from on-site wastewater treatment systems to the Baltic Sea. 2. 2. Spring water stress in Scots pine: interaction of snow and soil temperature

    Author : Per-Erik Mellander; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Low temperature; soil warming; transpiration; root water uptake; carbon dioxide assimilation; soil frost; silvicultural practice; Pinus Sylvestris; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Water use and net carbon assimilation during spring was examined on Scots pine trees exposed to different soil warming dynamics in the field. Sap flow, needle water potential and net carbon assimilation were measured on trees that were exposed to a wide range of soil temperature regimes caused by manipulating the snow cover on tree-scale soil plots. 4. 4. Nutrient Limitation of Bacterial Growth in Soil

    Author : Fredrik Demoling; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ekologi; Ecology; Fertilization; Bacteria; Soil; Fungi; Thymidine or Leucine incorporation; Growth limitation; Phosphorus; Nitrogen; Carbon;

    Abstract : Lack of carbon has been assumed to be the most common limiting factor for bacterial growth in soil, although there are reports of limitation by nitrogen and phosphorus. I have studied nutrient limitation of bacterial growth in soil using a novel technique, where thymidine or leucine incorporation is used to detect changes in growth rates after adding nutrients. 5. 5. Linking root traits and plant-soil feedbacks to environmental change in the sub-arctic tundra

    Author : Clydecia Spitzer; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Plant community assembly processes shape the composition and abundances of species, and encompass functional traits and resource acquisition strategy of species, biotic interactions and abiotic filtering. Hence, an understanding of these complex processes requires disentangling the effects of multiple factors influencing plant community assembly. READ MORE
