  1. 1. Quantity and quality of soil organic matter in permafrost terrain

    Author : Gustaf Hugelius; Peter Kuhry; Philip Wookey; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; carbon; soil organic matter; soil organic carbon; permafrost; arctic; upscaling; peat plateau; cryoturbation; active layer; thermokarst; carbon nitrogen ratio; stable isotopes; humification; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; geografi med naturgeografisk inriktning; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : High latitude terrestrial ecosystems are considered key components in the global carbon (C) cycle and hold large reservoirs of soil organic carbon (SOC). Much of this is stored as soil organic matter (SOM) in permafrost soils and peat deposits and is vulnerable to remobilization under future global warming. READ MORE

  2. 2. Soil Organic Matter Dynamics and Methane Fluxes at the Forest – Tundra Ecotone in Fennoscandia

    Author : Sofie Sjögersten; Gaius Shaver; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Decomposition; forest – tundra ecotone; environmental change; Fennoscandia; methane; soil organic matter; subarctic.; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : This thesis presents results from several studies that have focused on the carbon and nutrient dynamics in soils at the forest – tundra ecotone in Fennoscandia. The main objectives of the study were: (i) to investigate the links between the physical environment, above-ground vegetation communities, soil carbon storage, nutrient status and the chemical composition of the soil organic matter (SOM), and (ii) to quantify trace gas fluxes (methane and carbon dioxide) between mesic soils and the atmosphere. 3. 3. Role of soil organic matter for immobilisation of metals : treatment of leachate from MSWI bottom ashes

    Author : Jurate Kumpiene; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Waste Science and Technology; Avfallsteknik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the focus is laid on the ability of natural organic matter (OM) to serve as a metal stabilising agent. The metal contaminants investigated arise from the MSWI bottom ash leachate. Besides the high content of metals, elevated pH and salinity are characteristic for ash leachate that, in turn, can alter the functionality of OM. READ MORE

  4. 4. Decomposition of soil organic matter under a changing climate : a matter of efficiency?

    Author : Tobias Bölscher; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Soil organic matter is the largest carbon (C) pool in the terrestrial C cycle, and soil CO₂ emissions surpass anthropogenic emissions from fossil fuel combustion by a factor of nine. Therefore, mechanisms controlling C stabilisation in soils and its feedback to climate change are widely debated. READ MORE

  5. 5. Storage, landscape partitioning and lability of soil organic matter in permafrost terrain

    Author : Juri Palmtag; Peter Kuhry; Johan Stendahl; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : Recent estimates indicate that soils in the northern circumpolar permafrost region store substantial amounts of soil organic carbon (SOC). This reservoir has accumulated over 10-100.000 years and is often preserved in a relatively undecomposed state because frozen and often water-logged conditions prevented microbial degradation.
