  1. 6. Geotechnical Aspects of Buildings on Expansive Soils in Kibaha, Tanzania : Preliminary Study

    Author : Charles Lucian; Staffan Hintze; Bo Berggren; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; expansive soils; soil properties; potential swell; Soil-Structure Interaction SSI ; and superstructure and substructure.; Building engineering; Byggnadsteknik;

    Abstract : The focus of this study is on potential problems resulting from construction on expansive soils in Kibaha region, Tanzania. For the fact that most of the affected structures are founded on expansive soils, a clear understanding of the soil behaviour and their interaction with structures, specifically as they relate to shallow foundations, has been of more interest to the study in order to evaluate properly the source of the problem. 2. 7. Investigation of Suffusion in Glacial Till Dam Cores : Testing methods and critical hydraulic gradients

    Author : Ingrid Silva; Jan Laue; Peter Viklander; Thomas Pabst; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; internal erosion; suffusion; glacial till; dam cores; dams; experimental investigation; hydraulic gradient; testing methods; cohesionless soils; granular soils; Geoteknik; Soil Mechanics;

    Abstract : Suffusion is an internal erosion mechanism that occurs in embankment dams when fine grained particles in the dam core are washed out by seepage. Initiation of internal erosion depends mainly on three major factors: grain size distribution of the soil, stress conditions and hydraulic gradient; whilst its continuation depends on the properties of the filter. 3. 8. Unsaturated Solute Transport in a Semiarid Catchment - Nonlinear Analyses and Modelling

    Author : Pernilla Öhrström; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; teknisk geografi; Hydrogeologi; teknisk geologi; unsaturated zone; Hydrogeology; geographical and geological engineering; solute transport; scaling; soils; semiarid regions; heterogeneity; preferential flow; fractals;

    Abstract : Unsaturated solute transport is highly variable and therefore difficult to predict. In semi-arid areas, where water resources are limited, the presence of macropores is of great importance for crop production. The bromide ion (Br-) and dye tracers are useful for studies of water movement. READ MORE

  4. 9. Wild plants can improve their rhizosphere chemistry in acid soils

    Author : Marion Schöttelndreier; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; wild plants.; time pattern; soil heterogeneity; rhizotrons; rhizosphere; pH; oxalic acid; nutrient availability; malic acid; hydroponics; citric acid; 14C; biodegradation; acid soils; aluminium toxicity; Soil Science; agricultural hydrology; Lantbrukshydrologi; marklära; Plant biochemistry; Växtbiokemi;

    Abstract : Growth conditions on acid soils may be hampered by low nutrient availability and phytotoxic Al (aluminium) concentrations. In this thesis I present my studies on adaptation mechanisms of wild plants to acid soils in the close root environment, the rhizosphere. READ MORE

  5. 10. Artificial Ground Freezingin Clayey Soils : Laboratory and Field Studies of Deformations During Thawing at the Bothnia Line

    Author : Teddy Johansson; Staffan Hintze; Håkan Stille; Sven Knutsson; Kauko Kujala; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Artificial ground freezing; AGF; thaw deformation; deformation; thawing; frost heaving; Bothnia Line.; Artificiell markfrysning; artificiell jord- och bergfrysning; AGF; tiningsdeformation; deformation; tining; tjälhävning; Botniabanan; Geoengineering; Geoteknik;

    Abstract : Artificial ground freezing as a method to temporarily stabilize and create hydraulic sealing in urban as well as in rural areas has been used in a number of Swedish construction projects, particularly during the last decade. One problem with the freezing of soil and rock is that fine-grained clayey types of soils have showed a tendency to under certain circumstances, during the thawing process, create a pore water overpressure and to consolidate, despite a change in the external loading conditions.
