1. Space Weather Physics: Dynamic Neural Network Studies of Solar Wind-Magnetosphere Coupling
Abstract : This thesis presents studies of solar wind-magnetosphere coupling using dynamic neural networks in combination with statistically correlative analysis. The primary contribution of the thesis is dynamic neural network models that can be implemented for near real-time predictions of geomagnetic storms from the solar wind alone. READ MORE

2. New Perspectives on Solar Wind-Magnetosphere Coupling
Abstract : The streaming plasma in the solar wind is a never ending source of energy, plasma, and momentum for planetary magnetospheres, and it continuously drives large-scale plasma convection systems in our magnetosphere and over our polar ionosphere. This coupling between the solar wind and the magnetosphere is primarily explained by two different processes: magnetic reconnection at high latitudes, which interconnects the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) with the planetary dipole field, and low-latitude dynamos such as viscous interaction, where the streaming plasma in the solar wind may trigger waves and instabilities at the flanks of the magnetosphere, and thereby allow solar wind plasma to enter into the system. 3. Energization and Acceleration of Dayside Polar Outflowing Oxygen
Abstract : This thesis deals with energetic oxygen ions (i.e. single-charged atomic oxygen ions, O+) at altitudes higher than 5 Earth radii (RE) and at latitudes above 75 (toward 90) degrees invariant latitude (deg ILAT) in the dayside polar magnetosphere observed by Cluster. READ MORE

5. Space Weather Physics, Prediction and classification of solar wind structures and geomagnetic activity using artificial neural networks
Abstract : This thesis concerns the application of artificial neural network techniques to space weather physics. The networks applied include multi-layer error-backpropagation, radial basis function, and self-organized maps. READ MORE
