  1. 1. Principles and Models of Solid Fuel Combustion

    Author : Henrik Thunman; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; wood; single particle; modelling; fluidized bed; thermochemical conversion; fixed bed; coal; thermal conductivity; fuel loading; measurements; thermochemical properties; biofuels; combustion; grate;

    Abstract : Combustion of solid fuels stands for a substantial part of the heat and power production in the world. In this thesis different aspects related to the thermochemical conversion of solid fuels in fluidized and fixed beds are treated, such as: the combustion temperature of a fuel particle related to the surrounding temperature in a fluidized bed combustor (FBC); the fuel loading in a FBC; a transient description of the conversion of non-spherical fuel particles; the thermochemical properties and composition of volatiles released from wood; the thermal conductivity of wood during different stages of conversion; the modelling of a grate furnace; the general combustion behaviour of a fixed bed on a reciprocating or a travelling grate; and finally, the design and construction of experimental units for investigation of combustion in a fixed bed. 2. 2. Modelling elements in conversion of solid fuels - fixed bed combustion and gaseous radiation

    Author : Robert Johansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; combustion; fixed bed; modelling; solid fuels; gas radiation;

    Abstract : For a long heat and power production by combustion of solid fuels has time been an established technique. Environmental concern of emissions for NOx, SOx and other harmful species has caused an increasingly stricter legislation on the emission levels of the boilers. READ MORE

  3. 3. Combustion Chemistry Investigation of Liquid and Solid Fuels

    Author : Åsa Håkansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gasoline; flame; GC MS; heptane; combustion; pyrolysis; kinetics; emissions; wood; RME;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to study the combustion of liquid and solid fuels with the emphasis on intermediates and products. Depending on the structure and the complexity of the fuel different reactors and methods were used. Small-scale laboratory reactors were built and chemical analysis and evaluation methods were developed. Heptane. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of Varying Combustion Conditions on PCDD/F Formation

    Author : Johanna Aurell; Stellan Marklund; Sukh Sidhu; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dioxin; formation; PCDD; PCDF; MSW incineration; transient combustion; sulfur; memory effects; quench time; chlorine; combustion; polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes; NO; water; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are by-products emitted from combustion sources such as municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration plants. These organic compounds are recognized as toxic, bioaccumulative and persistent in the environment. READ MORE

  5. 5. Detecting, Modelling and Measuring Disturbances in Fixed-bed Combustion

    Author : Sven Hermansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; CFD modelling; solid fuels; grate furnaces; moisture content; fixed bed; combustion;

    Abstract : Combustion of fixed fuel beds in grate furnaces is one of the most common techniques within production of heat and power from solid fuels. The grate furnace used to be a working horse for combustion of hard coal, while today the incitement of using renewable fuel sources has turned biomass and municipal waste into dominating fuel types.
