  1. 16. Temporal dynamics of brain plasticity : characterizing brain structural changes during skill acquisition

    Author : Tomás Mediavilla; Daniel Marcellino; Alexandra Badea; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Motor learning; brain plasticity; structural plasticity; magnetic resonance imaging; voxel-based morphometry; tractography; connectivity; motor cortex; posterior parietal cortex; cerebellum; vesicular glutamate transporter;

    Abstract : Traditionally, structural plasticity in the human brain has been considered to follow a linear or asymptotic increase over the course of training. However, recent studies using structural MRI revealed transient increases in grey matter volume (GMV) with learning. READ MORE

  2. 17. Spotting pain in the brain. Towards a useful animal model of pain

    Author : Tanja Jensen; Neurofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; analgesics; freely moving rat; microelectrode; Nociception; Primary somatosensory cortex; Sedatives;

    Abstract : Current models of pain in conscious animals usually scores nocifensive responses. However, it is still unclear to what extent these responses are related to, for instance, the sensory discriminative or affective aspects of pain. READ MORE

  3. 18. On the evolutionary origin of the vertebrate cortex

    Author : Shreyas M Suryanarayana; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to dissect out the minimalistic ancestral neural hardware, which has been conserved in homologue structures of the cerebral cortex and in particular the neocortex, across vertebrates. For this purpose, we utilise the lamprey - a cyclostome (jawless vertebrate), and we compare its anatomical homologue of cortex, the lateral pallium (LPal), in terms of its connectivity, cytoarchitecture and sensory organisation with that of the mammalian neocortex. 4. 19. Pain, Touch, and Decision Making : Behavioral and Brain Responses to Affective Somatosensory Stimulation

    Author : Lina Koppel; India Morrison; Daniel Västfjäll; Gustav Tinghög; Johannes Haushofer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Stimulation of sensory nerves can give rise to powerful affective experiences. Noxious stimuli can give rise to pain, an unpleasant experience which, in turn, causes suffering and constitutes a major societal burden. Touch, on the other hand, can feel pleasant and plays an important role in social relationships and well-being. READ MORE

  5. 20. Functional mapping of somatosensory cortices in the human brain

    Author : Anna S K Bodegård; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sornatosensory areas; PET; cytoarchitectonic mapping; postcentral gyrus; shape perception; active touch; passive touch;

    Abstract : Tactile perception is a remarkable ability that enables us to recognise objects and handle tools. Cortical processing during tactile and shape perception in humans is not fully understood. READ MORE
