1. Laser-Induced Incandescence for Soot Diagnostics: Theoretical Investigation and Experimental Development
Abstract : Laser-induced incandescence, LII, is a laser-diagnostic technique that can be used to measure the volume fraction and the sizes of soot particles suspended in a gas, such as within a combustion process or in its exhausts. The technique is based on the facts that the time-decay of the radiation from laser-heated soot particles is directly related to the particle size in the probed volume, and that the time-integrated radiation is related to the soot volume fraction. 2. On the Use of Laser-Induced Incandescence for Soot Diagnostics: From Theoretical Aspects to Applications in Engines
Abstract : The laser-induced incandescence technique (LII) is a laser-based diagnostic technique for measurements of soot volume fraction and particle size. The technique relies on detection of incandescent light from soot particles heated to around 4000 K using nanosecond laser pulses. READ MORE

3. Numerical Modelling of Soot Formation in Turbulent Non-Premixed Flames
Abstract : This thesis describes an extended flamelet approach for modelling of soot formation in turbulent hydrocarbons diffusion flames. Detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms are used to compute species concentrations, temperature, density and soot formation rates as functions of flamelet coordinates in the space of mixture fraction and scalar dissipation rate. 4. Combustion Studies of Soot and Fuel Based on Use of Laser Diagnostics
Abstract : In the work described in the present thesis, laser techniques for combustion engine diagnostics were developed and applied. The main techniques were laser-induced incandescence (LII) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), used for both flame and engine diagnostics. READ MORE

5. Laser-based diagnostics for investigating soot formation in combustion processes
Abstract : In this work, laser-based diagnostic techniques were developed and applied to investigate soot formation in small-scale laboratory burners as well as in practical combustion devices. Quantitative 2D laser-induced incandescence (LII) measurements often use a cylindrical lens to shape the beam and illuminate the planar region of interest. READ MORE
