  1. 1. Evaluation of a thermally driven heat pump for solar heating and cooling applications

    Author : Corey Blackman; Chris Bales; Eva Thorin; Victoria Martin; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; solar energy; solar heating and cooling; sorption integrated; Reesbe företagsforskarskola; Reesbe företagsforskarskola; Energy- and Environmental Engineering;

    Abstract : Exploiting solar energy technology for both heating and cooling purposes has the potential of meeting an appreciable portion of the energy demand in buildings throughout the year. By developing an integrated, multi-purpose solar energy system, that can operate all twelve months of the year, a high utilisation factor can be achieved which translates to more economical systems. 2. 2. A step forward in using QSARs for regulatory hazard and exposure assessment of chemicals

    Author : Aleksandra Rybacka; Patrik Andersson; Christina Rudén; Anna Linusson; Uko Maran; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; QSAR; in silico; non-testing tools; risk assessment; exposure assessment; hazard assessment; carcinogenicity; mutagenicity; reproductive toxicity; endocrine disruption; estrogen; androgen; transthyretin; sorption; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap; Computer Science; datalogi; Toxicology; toxikologi; Statistics; statistik;

    Abstract : According to the REACH regulation chemicals produced or imported to the European Union need to be assessed to manage the risk of potential hazard to human health and the environment. An increasing number of chemicals in commerce prompts the need for utilizing faster and cheaper alternative methods for this assessment, such as quantitative structure-activity or property relationships (QSARs or QSPRs). 3. 3. Evaluation of Modular Thermally Driven Heat Pump Systems

    Author : Corey Blackman; Eva Thorin; Chris Bales; Christian Schweigler; Mälardalens universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; sorption heat pump; sorption module; thermochemical energy storage; artificial neural network; built environment; solar energy; gas-driven heat pump; solar cooling; heating and cooling; renewable energy; energy efficiency; experimental; simulation; analytical; Energy- and Environmental Engineering; energi- och miljöteknik; Reesbe företagsforskarskola;

    Abstract : The building sector accounts for approximately 40% of primary energy use within the European Union, therefore reductions in the energy use intensity of this sector are critical in decreasing total energy usage. Given that the majority of energy used within the built environment is for space conditioning and domestic hot water preparation, prudence would suggest that decreasing primary energy used for these end purposes would have the biggest overall environmental impact. 4. 4. Stress Effects on Solute Transport in Fractured rocks

    Author : Zhihong Zhao; Lanru Jing; Ivars Neretnieks; Auli Niemi; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fractured rocks; Solute transport; Stress effects; Coupled stress-flow-transport processes; Analytical solution; Particle mechanics model; Fracture surface damage; Discrete element method; Particle tracking method;

    Abstract : The effect of in-situ or redistributed stress on solute transport in fractured rocks is one of the major concerns for many subsurface engineering problems. However, it remains poorly understood due to the difficulties in experiments and numerical modeling. READ MORE

  5. 5. Biofiltration technologies for stormwater quality treatment

    Author : Godecke-Tobias Blecken; Jean-Luc Bertrand-Krajewski; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering;

    Abstract : Due to high runoff volumes and peak flows, and significant contamination with (inter alia) sediment, metals, nutrients, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and salt, urban stormwater is a major cause of degradation of urban water ways. Since current urban drainage systems, which heavily rely on piped sewer networks, may not be sustainable, attempts are being made to develop and refine sustainable urban drainage solutions, notably in Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and Low Impact Development (LID) concepts.
