1. The type I-E CRISPR-Cas system : Biology and applications of an adaptive immune system in bacteria
Abstract : CRISPR-Cas systems are adaptive immune systems in bacteria and archaea, consisting of a clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) array and CRISPR associated (Cas) proteins. In this work, the type I-E CRISPR-Cas system of Escherichia coli was studied.CRISPR-Cas immunity is divided into three stages. READ MORE

2. Integration of epitaxial SiGe(C) layers in advanced CMOS devices
Abstract : Heteroepitaxial SiGe(C) layers have attracted immense attention as a material for performance boost in state of the art electronic devices during recent years. Alloying silicon with germanium and carbon add exclusive opportunities for strain and bandgap engineering. READ MORE

3. Process integration issues for high-performance bipolar technology
Abstract : The work in this thesis has been focused on processintegration issues for high-performance bipolar technologyincluding experimental work on self-aligned silicides,ion-implanted andin situdoped polysilicon emitters, strained silicongermanium for heterojunction bipolar transistors and physicalprocess and device simulation.Key issues for the self-aligned silicidation of small devicefeatures such as the influence of dopants, silicon morphologyand line width on titanium disilicide formation, phasetransformation and temperature stability, have been addressed. 4. Source and drain engineering in SiGe-based pMOS transistors
Abstract : A new shallow junction formation process, based on selective silicon etching followed by selective growth of in situ B-doped SiGe, is presented. The approach is advantageous compared to conventional ion implantation followed by thermal activation, because perfectly abrupt, low resistivity junctions of arbitrary depth can be obtained. 5. Small RNAs, Big Consequences : Post-transcriptional Regulation and Adaptive Immunity in Bacteria
Abstract : It is nowadays widely accepted that non-coding RNAs play important roles in post-transcriptional regulation of genes in all kingdoms of life. In bacteria, the largest group of RNA regulators are the small RNAs (sRNAs). READ MORE
