  1. 11. Functional understanding of space : Representing spatial knowledge using concepts grounded in an agent's purpose

    Author : Kristoffer Sjöö; Patric Jensfelt; David Vernon; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; spatial representation; autonomous robots; spatial understanding; semantic mapping; spatial relations; visual search; robot search;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the role of function in representations of space by robots - that is, dealing directly and explicitly with those aspects of space and objects in space that serve some purpose for the robot. It is suggested that taking function into account helps increase the generality and robustness of solutions in an unpredictable and complex world, and the suggestion is affirmed by several instantiations of functionally conceived spatial models. 2. 12. The Architectural Metaphor : Textual Models in Spatial Construction

    Author : Anders Johansson; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Architecture; Architectural theory; Model; Metaphor; Narrative; Representation; Trope; Paul Ricoeur; Max Black; Nelson Goodman; Michel de Certeau;

    Abstract : The dissertation concerns the concept of model withinarchitecture, and elaborates particular uses in this field,where modelling is a heuristic process aiming at invention anddiscovery. Methodologically, this is made by introducing thecomparative concepts of metaphor and narrative. READ MORE

  3. 13. Spatial analysis and modeling of nerve fiber patterns

    Author : Claes Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hierarchical models; Bayesian estimation; epidermal nerve fibers; cluster processes; spatial point processes; diabetic neuropathy; Bayesian field theory; Diabetic neuropathies; Multilevel models Statistics ; Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper. Tillämpad matematik och statistik.; CTH;

    Abstract : Diabetic neuropathy is a condition associated with diabetes affecting the epidermal nerve fibers (ENFs). This thesis presents analysis methods and models for ENF data, with two main puroposes: to find early signs of diabetic neuropathy and to characterize how this condition changes the nerve fiber structure. 4. 14. Spatial Spread of Organisms : Modeling ecological and epidemiological processes

    Author : Tom Lindström; Uno Wennergren; Colleen Webb; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Spatial kernel; Spatially explicit modeling; Disease transmission; Animal movements; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the spread of organisms in both ecological and epidemiological contexts. In most of the studies presented, displacement is modeled with a spatial kernel function, which is characterized by scale and shape. These are measured by the net squared displacement (or kernel variance) and kurtosis, respectively. READ MORE

  5. 15. Hedonic prices, economic growth, and spatial dependence

    Author : Krister Sandberg; Lars Westin; Bernard Fingleton; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; business and economics; hedonic prices; spatial econometrics; co-operative flats; spatial dependence; SAR-GM; Single-family Homes; Heterogeneity; China; Convergence; Provincial Economic Growth; Ekonomi; Business and economics; Ekonomi; nationalekonomi; Economics;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of three papers on econometric modeling of spatial dependence. The awareness of interactions between actors is fundamental for understanding property markets as well as the growth of regions. In both cases, neighbors and neighboring markets may stimulate or hamper growth of values. READ MORE
