  1. 1. Functional understanding of space : Representing spatial knowledge using concepts grounded in an agent's purpose

    Author : Kristoffer Sjöö; Patric Jensfelt; David Vernon; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; spatial representation; autonomous robots; spatial understanding; semantic mapping; spatial relations; visual search; robot search;

    Abstract : This thesis examines the role of function in representations of space by robots - that is, dealing directly and explicitly with those aspects of space and objects in space that serve some purpose for the robot. It is suggested that taking function into account helps increase the generality and robustness of solutions in an unpredictable and complex world, and the suggestion is affirmed by several instantiations of functionally conceived spatial models. 2. 2. Infants’ Knowledge of Occluded Objects: Evidence of Early Spatiotemporal Representations

    Author : Gustaf Gredebäck; Claes von Hofsten; Janette Atkinson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Psychology; infants; occlusion; gaze; object representations; temporal; spatial; associative rule; extrapolation; Psykologi; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Abstract : This thesis demonstrates that infants represent temporarily non-visible, or occluded, objects. From 4 months of age, infants could accurately predict the reappearance of a moving object after 660 ms of non visibility; indicating accurate spatiotemporal representations. READ MORE

    Abstract : When residential segregation is mentioned in news coverage and when it is talked about in everyday discourse in Sweden, it is very often associated with immigration and minority groups living in the poorer areas of the city. A common assumption is that “immigrants” actively withdraw from society and that they choose to live together rather than integrating with the majority population. READ MORE

  4. 4. Spatial analysis and modeling of urban transportation networks

    Author : Jingyi Lin; Yifang Ban; Sten Henning Hansen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Complex networks; transportation systems; network growth; Evolving networks; centrality; urban systems; topology; space syntax; spatial networks; distance effects; gravity laws; planarity; street network patterns; US airline system; China’s aviation system; network efficiency; cellular structure; hierarchy; network representations; Geodesy and Geoinformatics; Geodesi och geoinformatik;

    Abstract : Transport systems in general, and urban transportation systems in particular, are the backbone of a country or a city, therefore play an intrinsic role in the socio-economic development. There have been numerous studies on real transportation systems from multiple fileds, including geography, urban planning, and engineering. READ MORE

  5. 5. Constructing the Suburb : Swedish Discourses of Spatial Stigmatisation

    Author : Karin Backvall; Irene Molina; Roger Andersson; Mustafa Dikeç; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Spatial stigmatisation; segregation; representation; suburb; discourse; Geography; Geografi;

    Abstract : By exploring representations of place, this thesis treats practices of spatial stigmatisation in the context of segregated Swedish cities. In three papers, different aspects of stigmatisation and place-making are discussed and analysed, where the overarching ambition is to identify and critically deconstruct the ideology behind stigma as well as suggest ways of making representation positive.
