  1. 16. Halomonas species as a source of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). Preparation of hydrophilic macroporous polymer scaffolds

    Author : Daniel Guzmán; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Halomonas species; poly 3-hydroxybutyrate ; genome sequence; Fed-batch cultivation; macroporous scaffolds;

    Abstract : This thesis presents studies on moderately halophilic bacteria belonging to the family Halomonadaceae that accumulate polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) in high amounts when grown under conditions of nitrogen limitation. PHB is the simplest homopolymer belonging to the class of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), the biopolyesters that can biodegraded in the environment to carbon dioxide and water and are hence attractive substitutes for fossil-derived plastics. 2. 17. How the sensory ecology of the bumblebee affects their functional traits

    Author : Vun Wen Jie; Emily Baird; Mikael Carlsson; Martin How; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bumblebee; functional morphological traits; intraspecific differences; allometry; DRA; micro-CT; co-existence; Functional Zoomorphology; funktionell zoomorfologi;

    Abstract : Morphological traits are important for trait-based ecological studies as they allow for the prediction of biodiversity across the biosphere. Currently, the predictive power of trait-based ecology is not often applied to terrestrial arthropods, even though they provide us with important agricultural, ecological, and cultural value. 3. 18. The effect of climate on oak-based species interactions : annual number of leaf flushes and insect voltinism

    Author : Álvaro Gaytán; Ayco J. M. Tack; Karl Gotthard; Kailen A. Mooney; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; climate change; food webs; latitude; leaf flush; plant-based species interactions; Quercus robur; voltinism; Ecology and Evolution; ekologi och evolution;

    Abstract : Plants interact with a large diversity of organisms, including insects and microorganisms. These species interactions are strongly influenced by climate, as illustrated by the advances in plant and insect phenology in response to increasing temperatures. READ MORE

  4. 19. Floating treatment wetlands for stormwater management : Plant species selection and influence of external factors for heavy metal and chloride removal in a cold climate

    Author : Maria Schück; Maria Greger; Hans Brix; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Floating treatment wetlands; Phytodesalination; Rhizofiltration; Phytoremediation; Stormwater; Heavy metals; Chloride; Plant traits; Carex riparia; Carex pseudocyperus; Phalaris arundinacea; Flytande våtmarker; dagvatten; tungmetaller; klorid; fytoremediering; slokstarr; rörflen; jättestarr; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Stormwater, which consists of rainwater and snowmelt, often contains pollutants from vehicle traffic, building materials, and industries. These pollutants include chloride and heavy metals, which can cause several environmental issues, such as being toxic to biota at elevated concentrations. READ MORE

  5. 20. Species’ responses to an ever-changing world

    Author : Jonatan Årevall; Anna Eklöf; Uno Wennergren; Frederick De Laender; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : One of nature’s most astonishing features is the diversity of life, as more than a million species has been identified and classified. This diversity not only have a intrinsic value, but sustains us humans through a multitude of ecosystem services. Many of these services are critical for our sustenance. READ MORE
