16. Trees for tough urban sites : learning from nature
Abstract : The main body of work in this thesis was to develop and test a working procedure for identification of new tree species and genotypes that holds the potential to diversify urban tree populations. This process has been set in context through a literature review which characterise species-specific information about the tolerance of trees to the environmental stresses in urban paved sites. 17. Filamentous cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea - spatiotemporal patterns and nitrogen fixation
Abstract : Summer blooms of filamentous, diazotrophic cyanobacteria are typical of the Baltic Sea Proper, and are dominated by Aphanizomenon sp. and the toxic Nodularia spumigena. Although occurring every summer, the blooms vary greatly in timing and spatial distribution, making monitoring difficult and imprecise. READ MORE

18. Species interactions in streams - effects of predation, competition and ecosystem properties
Abstract : Stream ecosystems are dynamic and they have an inherent environmental variability. Organisms that live in streams are adapted to the continuously changing environment and the presence or absence of species are determined by their environmental requirements, while abundance is most often affected by interactions, such as competition and predation, with other species that are found in the same habitat. 19. Microdosimetry of radiohalogens in thyroid models
Abstract : The radiohalogens 123I, 124I, 125I, 131I, and 211At are routinely used or proposed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The different characteristics and application areas of these radioiodine isotopes, together with the possibility to bind them to the same carrier molecule, give many advantages, for example, by enabling relevant biodistribution and dosimetric studies important for dose-planning before radionuclide therapy. 20. Protein synthesis in vitro in skeletal muscle as an indicator of feeding conditions
Abstract : The activity of protein synthesis in vitro was determined using ribosomes isolated from rats, domestic animals and fish. The activity of rat skeletal muscle ribosomes was influenced by small differences in the nutritional quality of dietary proteins. READ MORE
