1. Leaf Area Index of Scandinavian Forests Methods Using in situ and Remotely Sensed Data
Abstract : This thesis deals with methods of obtaining the leaf area index (LAI) from remotely sensed satellite data. Initially, in situ estimation methods were investigated, since the accuracy of the remotely sensed estimates is dependent on the quality of these estimates. READ MORE

2. Linking plant population dynamics to the local environment and forest succession
Abstract : Linking environmental variation to population dynamics is necessary to understand and predict how the environment influences species abundances and distributions. I used demographic, environmental and trait data of forest herbs to study effects of spatial variation in environmental factors on populations as well as environmental change in terms of effects of forest succession on field layer plants. 3. Hybrid growth models for Norway spruce and Scots pine: Using leaf area and light use efficiency for predicting stemwood production
Abstract : With a changing climate, it has become more challenging to make long-term sustainable forest management decisions because many models and planning systems have difficulties accounting for the effects of climate change. One way to improve these tools is to include ecophysiological variables that respond to changes in weather and climate. READ MORE

4. Interactions between leaf lesions and the phyllosphere microbiota in leafy vegetables
Abstract : Leafy vegetables (baby leaves) are considered an important source and vector for transmission of foodborne pathogens to humans. Contamination can occur from farm to fork. Although ‘rare’, contamination events have a substantial impact on public health. READ MORE

5. Consequences of bushmeat hunting in tropical forests
Abstract : This thesis evaluates the effect of bushmeat hunting in southeastern Nigerian rainforests on: 1) adult tree, seedling, and animal community compositions 2) germination and survival among seedlings in association with competition 3) changes in community composition at multiple trophic levels 4) leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), leaf mass per area (LMA) and stem specific density (SSD) 5) on human reliance on forest resources and rural people use forest resources. Data for the first four evaluations were obtained from surveys, manipulative experiments in seedling plots and collected leaf samples in three pairs of sites with high (hunted sites) and low (protected sites) hunting pressure but with similar adult tree composition.
