6. Computational models for intent recognition in robotic systems
Abstract : The ability to infer and mediate intentions has been recognized as a crucial task in recent robotics research, where it is agreed that robots are required to be equipped with intentional mechanisms in order to participate in collaborative tasks with humans.Reasoning about - or rather, perceiving - intentions enables robots to infer what other agents are doing, to communicate what are their plans, or to take proactive decisions. 7. Perceptually motivated speech recognition and mispronunciation detection
Abstract : This doctoral thesis is the result of a research effort performed in two fields of speech technology, i.e., speech recognition and mispronunciation detection. Although the two areas are clearly distinguishable, the proposed approaches share a common hypothesis based on psychoacoustic processing of speech signals. READ MORE

8. Cognition in Hearing Aid Users : Memory for Everyday Speech
Abstract : The thesis investigated the importance of cognition for speech understanding in experienced and new hearing aid users. The aims were 1) to develop a cognitive test (Sentence-final Word Identification and Recall, or SWIR test) to measure the effects of a noise reduction algorithm on processing of highly intelligible speech (everyday sentences); 2) to investigate, using the SWIR test, whether hearing aid signal processing would affect memory for heard speech in experienced hearing aid users; 3) to test whether the effects of signal processing on the ability to recall speech would interact with background noise and individual differences in working memory capacity; 4) to explore the potential clinical application of the SWIR test; and 5) to examine the relationship between cognition and speech recognition in noise in new users over the first six months of hearing aid use. 9. Using the speech intelligibility index for evaluating speech test results and hearing aid characteristics
Abstract : Understanding speech is crucial for human communication. Therefore, speech audiometry plays an important part in the assessment of the hearing impaired, and improved speech intelligibility is a major goal of hearing aid fitting. READ MORE

10. Lip-motion and speech biometrics in person recognition
Abstract : Biometric identification techniques are frequently used to improve security, e.g. in financial transactions, computer networks and secure critical locations. The purpose of biometric authentication systems is to verify an individual by her biological characteristics including those generating characterisitic behaviour. READ MORE
