16. Experimental studies on barriers of the esophageal mucosa
Abstract : Reflux esophagitis is the multifactorial result of the failing of protective barriers and the aggressive assault on the esophageal epithelium by gastric contents entering the esophagus. The three main lines of defense against reflux are: the antireflux barriers, the luminal acid clearance and the epithelium itself. READ MORE

17. Exploring the role of rheology in bolus flow using an in-vitro approach
Abstract : Swallowing disorders, termed ‘dysphagia’, are more common in the elderly but can also affect younger persons. Approximately, 8% of the world’s population suffers from dysphagia. A Texture Modified Diet (TMD), which increases bolus viscosity to adjust for the sluggish bolus handling mechanism, is the most common intervention. READ MORE

18. Radiological evaluation of esophageal function in dysphagia with special emphasis on achalasia
Abstract : In idiopathic achalasia, degeneration of the inhibitory innervation of the esophageal smooth muscle results in absence of primary peristalsis and in incomplete relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). All treatments for achalasia aim at reducing the pressure gradient across the LES, thus facilitating esophageal emptying by gravity. READ MORE

19. Annular dynamics of the human heart : novel echocardiographic approaches to assess ventricular function
Abstract : The complex myocardial fiber architecture of the left ventricle (LV) enables long-axis motion (annular excursion), short-axis motion and also a small torsional deformation throughout the cardiac cycle. The contribution of the long-axis motion has proven to be important in generating ventricular filling and emptying, and the analysis of annular excursion has become a well established diagnostic tool for the assessment of ventricular function. 20. Stent treatment of perforated duodenal ulcer - physiology and clinical aspects
Abstract : Background The incidence of perforated duodenal ulcer is decreasing but still constitutes a life-threatening complication to peptic ulcer disease. Abdominal contamination from gastric or duodenal content occurs during perforations. READ MORE
