  1. 6. Spinal cord repair strategies

    Author : Henrich Cheng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Spinal cord; injury; paraplegia; repair; regeneration; nerve graft; fibrin glue; aFGF; GDNF; gait; axonal tracing Henrich Cheng; 1996;

    Abstract : Regeneration of long fiber tracts does not occur spontaneously in the adult mammalian brain or spinal cord. The present work is an attempt to develop a repair strategy that may overcome this lack of recovery and apply it to spinal cord injury. READ MORE

  2. 7. Older adults with long-term spinal cord injury

    Author : Sophie Jörgensen; Rehabiliteringsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rehabilitation; Spinal Cord Injuries; International Classification of Functioning; Disability and Health ICF ; Aging; Depression; Exercise; Activities of Daily Living; Adaptation; Psychological; Sense of Coherence;

    Abstract : As a result of advances in healthcare and rehabilitation, many people with spinal cord injury (SCI) have lived several decades with their injury. Knowledge of living with long-term SCI into older age is limited, despite an increased focus on aging with SCI in research and clinical practice. READ MORE

  3. 8. Spinal cord injury : mechanical and molecular aspects

    Author : Anna Josephson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Spinal cord; syringomyelia; MRI; fMRI; neurotrophin; Nogo; Nogo receptor; regulation;

    Abstract : Traumatic spinal cord injury leads to full or partial paralysis and loss of sensation below the level of injury. The annual incidence of spinal cord injury in the United States is 3-5 per 100,000 and in Sweden is 1.5-2 per 100,000. This translates to 11,000 new cases of traumatic spinal cord injury in the US and 150 in Sweden each year. READ MORE

  4. 9. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Author : Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 5. 10. Analysis of neuropathic pain after spinal cord injury

    Author : Lars Werhagen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Spinal cord injury; spina bifida; central cord syndrome; neuropathic pain; neuralgia;

    Abstract : Longstanding neuropathic pain is a challenge in spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation. Once established it is difficult to treat successfully. Neuropathic pain has a negative influence on quality of life and on the outcome of rehabilitation. The prevalence of neuropathic pain after SCI varies in different studies. READ MORE
