  1. 21. Morphological and immunohistochemical studies on the organisation of sacral motoneurons

    Author : Vania Ramirez-Leon; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : spinal cord; dendrites; synaptic input; aging;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study pre- and postsynaptic elements during postnatal development and aging. Motoneurons from two adjacent sacral motor nuclei in the cat spinal cord were investigated: the motoneurons innervating intrinsic foot-sole muscles (dorsolateral motor nucleus; DLN) and the motoneurons innervating striated perineal muscles (Onufs nucleus, ventrolateral motor nucleus; VLN). 2. 22. Analysis of different forms of locomotor behavior in lamprey

    Author : Salma Sanzida Islam; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Motor coordination; undulatory locomotion; postural corrections; spinal cord damage; lamprey;

    Abstract : The ability to locomote, that is move actively in space, is characteristic of the animal kingdom. Many species are capable of different forms of locomotion. They include forward and backward locomotion, fast and slow progression, etc. READ MORE

  3. 23. On the cholinergic c-bouton

    Author : Johan Hellström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Acetylcholine; Brainstem; Immunohistochemistry; In situ hybridization; Motoneurons; Muscarinic receptors; Rat; Spinal cord; Ventral horn cells;

    Abstract : The cholinergic C-bouton is a large nerve terminal type exclusively contacting motoneuron cell somata and proximal dendrites. C-boutons are characterized by subsurface cisterns found beneath the postsynaptic membrane, which is an exclusive feature for these nerve terminals. The origin of the C-boutons is unknown. READ MORE

  4. 24. Neuropeptide release in the rat dorsal horn in models of persistent pain : effects of opioids

    Author : Abdullahi Warsame Afrah; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Axotomy; Inflammation; Long term potentiation; Capsaicin; Opioids; Cholecystokinin; Substance P; Glutamate; NMDA; Spinal cord; Microdialysis; Radioimmunoassay.;

    Abstract : Nerve injury and tissue inflammation may lead to exaggerated responses to both noxious stimuli (hyperalgesia) and innocuous stimuli (allodynia). Altered release pattems of neurotransmitters in the dorsal hom of the spinal cord have been suggested to contribute to hyperalgesia and allodynia. READ MORE

  5. 25. Nervous mechanisms of postural control

    Author : Anastasia Karayannidou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Postural control; equilibrium; body confguration; motor cortex; reticulospinal system; standing; locomotion; spinal cord injury; cat; rabbit; lamprey;

    Abstract : Maintenance of body confguration and orientation in space (postural control) is a vital motor function. A general goal of the present study was to analyze nervous feedback mechanisms for the maintenance of posture during different motor behaviors and with different postural perturbations. READ MORE
