  1. 1. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies following spinal cord and brachial plexus injuries

    Author : Amar Karalija; Mikael Wiberg; Zhongyu John Li; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Spinal cord injury; brachial plexus injury; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; MRI; motoneurons; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and brachial plexus induce a significant inflammatory response in the nervous tissue with progressive degeneration of neurons and glial cells, and cause considerable physical and mental suffering in affected patients. This thesis investigates the effects of the antioxidants N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) and acetyl-L- carnitine (ALC) on the survival of motoneurons in the brainstem and spinal cord, the expression of pro-apoptotic and pro-inflammatory cell markers, axonal sprouting and glial cell reactions after spinal hemisection in adult rats. 2. 2. Regulation of CGRP expression in rat spinal motoneurons

    Author : Fredrik Piehl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; motoneuron; axotomy; peptides; CGRP; trophic factor; FGF; IGF; BDNF; CNTF; GAP-43; cell culture; plasticity; mRNAregulation; regeneration;

    Abstract : The normal distribution and lesion-induced changes in the expression of neuropeptides and growth-related proteins, with special reference to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP),were studied in the motor system of the rat. In addition, factors that influence the expression of CGRP in motoneurons were identified. READ MORE

  3. 3. An exploration of the mechanisms behind peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Rebecca Wiberg; Liudmila Novikova; Paul Kingham; Ash Mosahebi; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Peripheral nerve injury; target organ; spinal motoneurons; primary sensory neurons; degeneration; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : Despite surgical innovation, the sensory and motor outcome after peripheral nerve injury is incomplete. In this thesis, the biological pathways potentially responsible for the poor functional recoveries were investigated in both the distal nerve stump/target organ, spinal motoneurons and dorsal root ganglia (DRG). 4. 4. Spinal motoneurons and molecules related to neurotrophic function after axon injury

    Author : Henrik Hammarberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; spinal cord; motoneuron; axotomy; survival; regeneration; MHC 1; leukocyte; cell culture; mRNA expression;

    Abstract : The capacity of motoneurons to survive and regenerate new axons after injuries such as axotomy depends on a great variety of parameters. After sciatic nerve transection (SNT) in adult rats and to some extent after a ventral funiculus lesion (VFL), many cells survive and regeneration is highly prioritized. READ MORE

  5. 5. Immune recognition molecules in synaptic plasticity and regeneration of spinal motoneurons

    Author : Sebastian Thams; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on the emerging concept that pattern recognition molecules, originally characterized in the immune system, may be expressed and used by neurons to mediate non-immune functions. In line with this concept, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and certain complements proteins have been implicated in synaptic plasticity in the developing visual system. READ MORE
