  1. 1. Measurement of outcome in lumbar spine surgery : Validity and interpretability of frequently used outcome measures in the Swespine register

    Author : Catharina Parai; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spine register; disc herniation; spinal stenosis; degenerative disc disorder; patient-reported outcome measure; Global Assessment; minimal important change; smallest detectable change; retest reliability; non-response to follow-up; attrition; measurement of change;

    Abstract : BACKGROUND. The purpose of elective lumbar spine surgery is mainly to reduce pain and to improve physical function and quality of life. The quality and results of the interventions are monitored in the Swedish spine register, Swespine. READ MORE

  2. 2. Early onset spine deformity : outcome of surgical treatment and 3D movement analysis of sitting

    Author : Girts Murans; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Early onset, non-idiopathic spine deformities are progressive and associated with increased respiratory and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality as well as neurological and functional deteriorations. If untreated, the deformity progression can continue throughout the adult life and conclude with early mortality mostly due to cardio-pulmonary reason. READ MORE

  3. 3. Aspects on the influence of the thoracic wall on the pathogenesis of idiopathic scoliosis

    Author : Bo Sevastik; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Experimental and clinical studies were performed in order to study the possible influence of the thoracic wall on the pathomechanism of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, IS. Experimental longitudinal elongation of one rib resulted in a deviation of the vertebra in the frontal plane to the contralateral side of the elongated rib, an anterior displacement in the sagittal plane and a rotation towards the convexity of the curve, thus a deviation identical to the 3-D configuration of the spine seen in IS. 4. 4. Rheumatoid Arthritis: Body Composition, Bone Loss, and Mortality

    Author : Christina Book; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; fat mass; bone mass; lean mass; body composition; mortality; rheumatoid arthritis; predictors;

    Abstract : Early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients (disease duration ≤1 year, n=165) were recruited 1995-2001 and followed systematically clinically and with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) over 2 years and compared to age- and gender-matched controls. Baseline arm and leg lean mass were decreased in RA patients in both genders and body mass index and truncal fat distribution were increased in female RA patients. READ MORE

  5. 5. Outcome of treatment for scoliosis. A multi-disciplinary follow-up at least 20 years after surgery or brace treatment in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis with comparison to a matching control group

    Author : Aina Danielsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; scoliosis; spinal fusion; brace treatment; radiography; magnetic resonance imaging; osteoarthritis; spirometry; outcome studies; quality of life;

    Abstract : Introduction: The long term outcome of treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), with brace or surgery, has previously not been fully established.Aims: To evaluate the outcome in terms of radiological appearance, degenerative changes, pulmonary function and different aspects of health related quality of life at least twenty years after completed treatment.
