6. Nitric oxide production by the intestinal mucosa during hypoperfusion
Abstract : The present thesis is based on the concept that gastrointestinal blood hypoperfusion is a common phenomenon associated with critical illness. Furthermore, the development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is proposed to be initiated by gastrointestinal mucosal barrier dysfunction, allowing intestinal luminal contents to penetrate into the tissue and activate a systemic inflammatory response. 7. Levosimendan in early experimental sepsis: effects on the heart and hepatosplanchnic circulation
Abstract : Sepsis-related cardiovascular dysfunction associated with fluid-unresponsive tissue hypoperfusion might require inotropic treatment. This cardiovascular dysfunction seems to involve calcium desensitization and adrenergic unresponsiveness. READ MORE

8. On intestinal ischaemia after aortoiliac surgery : Epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies
Abstract : An important cause of death among patients undergoing surgery of the abdominal aorta is intestinal ischaemia. In the Swedish Vascular Registry 2930 aortoiliac operations were identified. The complication was studied in a combined cohort and case-control study, and multivariate analysis performed. The incidence of intestinal ischaemia was 2. READ MORE

9. Intestinal effects of lung recruitment maneuvers
Abstract : Background and aims: Lung recruitment maneuvers (brief episodes of high airway pressure) are a modern treatment alternative to achieve open lung conditions under mechanical ventilation of patients with acute lung injury. It is well known that positive pressure ventilation with high airway pressures cause negative circulatory effects, and that the effects on regional vascular beds can be even more pronounced than the systemic effects. 10. Regional oxygenation in cardiac surgery. Influence of temperature, pump flow and insulin
Abstract : Surgical trauma triggers neural, endocrine and inflammatory reactions with subsequent alterations in systemic and regional blood flow, blood pressure and metabolism. These changes are detectable after all major surgical procedures but are often more pronounced after cardiac surgery, probably because of blood exposure to artificial surfaces of the heart lung machine, temperature modulation (e.
