  1. 1. Immunomodulatory properties of steroid hormones

    Author : Maria Taube; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; DTH; oestradiol; corticosteroids; T cells; SCID mice; adoptive transfer; thymus; spleen.;

    Abstract : Recent epidemiological, clinical and experimental evidence have suggested that steroid hormones play an important role in immune responses and in immune-mediated diseases. Many autoimmune diseases are treated with corticosteroids. READ MORE

  2. 2. Immunohepatotoxicity of the persistent environmental pollutants perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)

    Author : Mousumi Rahman Qazi; Joe DePierre; Christopher Lau; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Perfluorooctanoate; Perfluorooctane sulfonate; Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha; Hepatomegaly; Immunotoxicity; Thymus; Spleen; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), manufactured for a variety of industrial and consumer applications, are ubiquitous environmental pollutants. Their accumulation in humans and wildlife raises serious health concerns. Here, we examined the potential effects of PFOA and PFOS on the innate immune system in mice. READ MORE

  3. 3. Function and Regulation of B-cell Subsets in Experimental Autoimmune Arthritis

    Author : Anna-Karin E. Palm; Sandra Kleinau; Susanna Cardell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; B cells; marginal zone; autoimmune arthritis; spleen; lymph node; antigen presentation; Fc gamma receptor IIb; complement receptors 1 and 2; mast cells; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär immunologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Immunology;

    Abstract : B lymphocytes play a significant role in autoimmune arthritis, with their function stretching beyond autoantibody production to cytokine secretion and presentation of autoantigen. However, the involvement and activation of different B-cell subset in the autoimmune response is not fully clear. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cardiovascular and respiratory effects of apnea in humans

    Author : Johan Andersson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lung volume; breath-hold diving; Apnea; breath-holding; face immersion; cold stimulation; diving response; diving reflex; circulation; bradycardia; vasoconstriction; arterial blood pressure; cardiac output; spleen; respiration; splenic contraction; alveol; Physiology; Fysiologi; Respiratory system; Andningsorganen; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with cardiovascular and respiratory effects of apneas in humans. During apnea (breath-holding), a number of interacting cardiovascular reflexes are initiated, and together these reflexes are called the “diving response”. READ MORE

  5. 5. Spleno-pancreatic development assessed by 3D molecular imaging

    Author : Amir Asayesh; Ulf Ahlgren; Beatriz Sosa-Pineda; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell biology; Spleen; Pancreas; Imaging; Development; Cellbiologi; miljömedicinsk utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental Biology;

    Abstract : The development of different organs and tissues along the gastrointestinal tract, including the pancreas, depends on signalling between the endoderm and the adjacent mesenchyme. The Nkx gene Bapx1 is involved in spatial control of organ-positioning in the spleno-pancreatic region, and deficiency in this gene results in unacceptable proximity of the splenic mesenchyme to the pancreas.
