  1. 11. Initiation of spleen contraction resulting in natural blood boosting in humans

    Author : Angelica Lodin; Erika Schagatay; Mats H. Linér; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Acclimatization; altitude; apnea; breath-hold diving; hemoglobin; hypercapnia; hypoxia; triggers;

    Abstract : The spleen has been shown to contract in apneic situations in humans as well as in other diving mammals, expelling its stored red blood cell content into circulation. This natural blood boosting may increase the circulating hemoglobin concentration (Hb) by up to 10%, which would enhance the oxygen carrying capacity and likely increase performance. READ MORE

  3. 13. Reduced ROS production triggers arthritis / The role of T cells in arthritis pathogenesis

    Author : Jens Holmberg; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; Spleen and lymph nodes Inflammation Reactive oxygen species T cells MHC; serology; Immunology; Immunologi; serologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to defend a novel mechanism that triggers arthritis susceptibility in both rats and mice through reduced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), but also to introduce a novel model for chronic relapsing arthritis. Five papers are included, all of which employ animal models for rheumatoid arthritis and one that also uses animal models for multiple sclerosis. READ MORE

  4. 14. Genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum infections : influence on protective malaria immunity

    Author : Sándor Bereczky; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Malaria; Plasmodium falciparum; genetic diversity; msp2; IgE; subsequent risk; asymptomatic; DNA extraction; ethnic group; spleen enlargement; hemoglobin;

    Abstract : Detailed knowledge of the interaction between the human host and the antigenic and genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum infections is a prerequisite for understanding the mechanisms underlying acquisition of immunity to malaria. This thesis assessed the diversity of P. READ MORE

  5. 15. Profilactin and the regulation of actin assembly and disassembly

    Author : Håkan Larsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Actin filament assembly and disassembly are believed to be fundamental steps in the mechanism of cell motility in non-muscle cells. Profilactin is a complex between monomeric actin and a small protein, profilin, which inhibits the polymerization of the actin. READ MORE
