6. Structural Insights at Sub-Ångstrom, Medium and Low Resolution: Crystallization of Trypsin, Bacterioferritin, Photosynthetic Reaction Center, and Photosynthetic Core Complex
Abstract : The catalytic action of serine proteases depends on the interplay of a nucleophile, a general base and a general acid. The catalytic triad is composed of serine, histidine and aspartate residues. The serine acts as a nucleophile while the histidine plays a dual role as the general base or acid at different steps of the reaction. READ MORE

7. PEG and lipids in solid dispersions and liquid crystals - structure and phase behaviour
Abstract : In this thesis, two different kinds of nano-structured systems have been studied; solid dispersion systems of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and liquid crystalline systems containing the polar lipids monoolein (MO) and phytantriol (PT). Solid dispersions of PEG were studied with addition of different substances, lipids or parabens. READ MORE

8. Advances in Membrane Protein Structural Biology: Lipidic Sponge Phase Crystallization, Time-Resolved Laue Diffraction and Serial Femtosecond Crystallography
Abstract : Membrane proteins carry out many essential tasks in cells such as signaling and transport, or function as electron carriers in photosynthesis and cellular respiration. The aim of this thesis has been to develop new and improve existing techniques for elucidating the structure and function of membrane proteins. READ MORE

9. ALA and m-ALA in bicontinuous lipid formulations: -Characterization and Transdermal Delivery
Abstract : δ-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and its methyl ester (m-ALA) are both used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) of certain non melanoma skin cancers as the basal cell carcinoma (BCC). In PDT the cancer cells are destroyed by a photochemical reaction that occurs when a photosensitive molecule is irradiated with light of a certain wavelength. READ MORE

10. Electrostatic Interactions in Complex Liquids : A Thermodynamic Analysis Based on the Poisson-Boltzmann Equation and the Flexible Surface Model
Abstract : The aim of this study was to analyse physico-chemical properties of some complex liquids using the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) cell model; to extend the theory to cover bilayer systems with complex global geometry; finally to apply this new extended model to such bilayer systems. The PB cell model provides a practical tool to examine counterion association and phase behaviour for structures of simple geometries; cylindrical and spherical. READ MORE
