6. Neutral and Adaptive Processes Shaping Genetic Variation in Spruce Species
Abstract : Population genetic analyses can provide information about both neutral and selective evolutionary processes shaping genetic variation. In this thesis, extensive population genetic methods were used to make inferences about genetic drift and selection in spruce species. READ MORE

7. Ectomycorrhizal community structure and function in relation to forest residue harvesting and wood ash applications
Abstract : Ectomycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic associations with tree roots and assist in nutrient-uptake and -cycling in forest ecosystems, thereby constituting a most significant part of the microbial community. The aims of the studies described in this thesis were to evaluate the potential of DNA-based molecular methods in below-ground ectomycorrhizal community studies and to investigate changes in ectomycorrhizal communities on spruce roots in sites with different N deposition, and in sites subjected to harvesting of forest residues or application of wood ash. 8. Spiral Grain in Norway Spruce
Abstract : Wood is a major construction material that is used in many contexts, and for different purposes. Serious problems may arise, however, when moisture related deformations as twist occur in wood used in different types of building structures, joinery and furniture. READ MORE

9. A forest dark : an evolutionary history of Norway spruce
Abstract : Embedded within the relationships among species is a dense forest of gene trees, each with a potentially unique and discordant history. Such widespread genealogical heterogeneity is expected, but embracing this hierarchy of discordance while reconstructing the histories of populations and species remains a major challenge. READ MORE

10. Mild Steam Explosion of Norway Spruce
Abstract : The most common wood species in Sweden, and one of the most important renewable raw materials in Northern Europe, is Norway spruce (Picea abies). Today, it is utilized mainly for sawed timber and the production of pulp and paper. READ MORE
