  1. 1. RNA in model lipid membranes - interactions in bulk and at surfaces

    Author : Agnes Michanek; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ssRNA; RNA origami; dsDNA; selfassembly phospholipids; model membranes; monolayer; QCM-D; DSC; Neutron reflectometry; hydrophobic interaction; cationic surfactants; sphingosine; phase behavior;

    Abstract : The work presented in the thesis “RNA in model lipid membranes- interactions in bulk and at surfaces” aims to characterize the interaction between RNA and model membranes with different properties as well as to determine if ssRNA associate with model membranes in different ways. Several techniques have been used to characterize these systems, including quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), Langmuir film balance in combination with neutron reflectometry and fluorescence microscopy as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). 2. 2. Arthritogenecity of RNA and its degradation products

    Author : Fariba Zare; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : dsRNA; ssRNA; virus; arthritis; TLR3; IL-1R; IFNalpha beta receptor; plasminogen; tissue factor; uric acid; inflammation; arthritis; neutrophils;

    Abstract : Viral infections often lead to arthralgias and overt arthritic states. Expression of double stranded RNA (dsRNA) is a common feature of all viruses during their replication and it has been suggested that it is able to induce production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, e.g., interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha). 3. 3. Some Aspects of Physicochemical Properties of DNA and RNA

    Author : Sandipta Acharya; Jyoti Chattopadhyaya; Piet Herdewijn; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Bioorganic chemistry; nucleic acids; hydrogen-bonding; stacking; single-stranded; NMR; molecular dynamics; Bioorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on nine research publications (I – IX) on structure and reactivity of RNA vis-à-vis DNA. The DNA and RNA are made of flexible pentose sugar units, polyelectrolytic phosphodiester backbone, and heterocyclic nucleobases. DNA stores our genetic code, whereas RNA is involved both in protein biosynthesis and catalysis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies on Nucleic Acids – Structure and Dynamics

    Author : Johan Isaksson; Jyoti Chattopadhyaya; Douglas H. Turner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bioorganic chemistry; nucleic acids; modified nucleotides; NMR; structure; dangling-end; single-stranded; thermodynamics; hydration; Bioorganisk kemi; Bioorganic chemistry; Bioorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis is based on six papers, Papers I-VI, focusing on the interplay between the stabilizing elements of nucleic acids self-assembly; hydrogen bonding, stacking and solvent effects. In Paper I we investigate how the substitution of the O4' for CH2 in the sugar moiety of adenosine (2'-deoxyaristeromycin) at the A6 position of the Dickerson-Drew dodecamer makes the two modified bases exist in a dynamic equilibrium between Hoogsteen and Watson-Crick base pairing in the NMR time scale. 5. 5. Virus inactivation : evaluation of processes used in biowaste management

    Author : Eva Emmoth; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Animal by-products (ABP) Category 3 includes hatchery waste, and also slaughterhouse waste and manure, aimed for use in biogas production. In order to be used as fertilisers, they must be sanitised to reduce pathogenic microorganisms. The initial European regulations regarding processing standards for ABP intended for use in e.g. READ MORE
