  1. 1. Protein based approaches for further development of the pyrosequencing technology platform

    Author : Maria Ehn; KTH; []
    Keywords : pyrosenquencing; ssb; zbasic; klenow; apyrase; expression; purification;

    Abstract : The innovation of DNA analysis techniques has enabled arevolution in the field of molecular biology. In the 70’s,first technologies for sequence determination of DNA wereinvented and these techniques enormously increased thepossibilities of genetic research. READ MORE

  2. 2. Endogenous Type I Interferon Inducers in Systemic Autoimmune Diseases

    Author : Tanja Lövgren; Lars Rönnblom; Gunnar Alm; Maija-Leena Eloranta; Andrej Tarkowski; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Systemic lupus erythematosus; Sjögren s syndrome; type I interferon; plasmacytoid dendritic cell; natural interferon-producing cell; immune complex; RNP; Ro SSA; La SSB; Medicin;

    Abstract : Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have elevated levels of interferon (IFN)-α in blood and IFN-α-producing cells in tissues. In the present thesis, we investigate the mechanisms behind the upregulated IFN-α-production in SLE and also show that the IFN-α system is activated in primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS), with IFN-α-producing cells in the major affected organ, the salivary glands. 3. 3. Repair of DNA double-stranded breaks in human cells

    Author : Susanne Nyström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; DNA-PK; DNA double-stranded break; DSB; DNA single-stranded break; SSB; DNA damage; ionizing radiation; IR; DNA repair; calicheamicin gamma1; bleomycin; etoposide; topoisomerase II; radiotherapy; radiosensitizer; ATM;

    Abstract : DNA is continuously subjected to degradation. Therefore, our cells need to constantly repair its DNA to prevent mutations and in the long run cancer. In mammalian cells, when DNA is broken right off, a double-stranded break (DSB) is produced, and the ends are ligated by a process called non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ). READ MORE

  4. 4. Recognition and signaling of DNA double-strand breaks in human cells

    Author : Ismail Hassan Ismail; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : DNA-PK; DNA double-strand break; DSB; DNA single-strand break; SSB; DNA damage; ionizing radiation; IR; DNA repair; calicheamicin kappa1; ATM; hydrogen peroxide; H2AX; radiotherapy; radiosensitizer; flow cytometry;

    Abstract : DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are the most toxic type of DNA damage. Fortunately, our cells have highly conserved pathways that detect and repair DSBs. Defects in DSB signaling and DSB repair pathways result in genomic instability that predisposes for cancer development. READ MORE

  5. 5. Post-translational modifications in DNA base excision repair : The roles of CK2 and PARP-1

    Author : Cecilia Ström; Thomas Helleday; Hans Krokan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; base excision repair; single-strand break repair; PARP-1; CK2; XRCC1; mammalian cells; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; molekylärgenetik; Molecular Genetics;

    Abstract : Base lesions and DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs) are very common types of DNA damage. The base excision repair (BER) and single-strand break repair (SSBR) machineries both require a succession of enzymatic events in order to remove these types of endogenous lesions and to restore the DNA.
