  1. 1. Plants go with the flow : predicting spatial distribution of plant species in the boreal forest

    Author : Ursula Zinko; Christer Nilsson; Håkan Rydin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; boreal forest; vascular plant; species richness; wetness index; soil pH; bryophyte; lichen; substrate; stand age; plot size; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : The main objectives of this thesis are to study if a topographic wetness index (TWI) could be used as a tool for predicting the spatial distribution of vascular plant species richness in the boreal forest as well as to study congruence in species richness between vascular plants, liverworts, mosses and lichens. A wetness index ln(a/tanβ) based on topography was used to assign a specific TWI-value to every 20 x 20m grid in two 25 km2 boreal forest landscapes (differing in average soil pH) in northern Sweden. 2. 2. Physical functioning in old age : temporal trends and geographical variation in Sweden

    Author : Britt-Marie Sjölund; Eva von Strauss; Högskolan i Gävle; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ADL disability;

    Abstract : ADL disability is an age-related condition that leads to poor quality of life, increased health-related care costs, and increased mortality. The proportion of older adults are increasing worldwide, and it is therefore important both for society and the individual that research provide us with information about the process leading to ADL disability and how to identify persons at risk. 3. 3. Stand development effects on N₂-fixation and seedling performance in northern boreal forests

    Author : Babs Stuiver; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : For large parts of the Swedish boreal forests, stand development starts with clear-cutting. Still, much is unknown about how stand development affects ecosystem processes and how these processes are driven by changes in vegetation and soil properties that occur during stand development. 4. 4. Changing Landscapes and Persistent Places : An Exploration of the Bjäre Peninsula

    Author : Jenny Nord; Arkeologi; []

    Abstract : Changing Landscapes and Persistent Places is a study of the cultural landscape on the Bjäre peninsula in northwest Skåne. The many Bronze Age remains that give the landscape its distinctive character are the starting point for an attempt to increase our understanding of the historical depth of today’s landscape. 5. 5. Cardiovascular risk factor profiles in the development and progression of physical limitation in old age : a population-based study

    Author : Emerald Georgiana Heiland; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Physical performance;

    Abstract : Preservation of independence has been reported to be highly desired by older adults, even more than longevity. However, subclinical cardiovascular pathology can threaten a healthy older adult’s maintenance of physical function. READ MORE
