1. Scattering Studies of Macromolecules in Solution
Abstract : The sphere-to-rod transition of nonionic micelles of the PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer P123 and the surfactant C12EO6 was studied using dynamic and static light scattering, small angel X-ray scattering, rheology and calorimetry. The transition temperature was dependent of the C12EO6/P123 molar ratio, which means that a larger content of C12EO6 yields a higher transition temperature. READ MORE

2. The Interaction between Triblock Copolymers and Surfactants in Dilute Aqueous Solution
Abstract : The solution properties of dilute aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymers and their interaction with surfactants have been investigated using static and dynamic light scattering, combined with small angle X-ray scattering, calorimetry and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. In aqueous solution, the triblock copolymers P123 and F127 (EO20PO68EO20 and EO97PO68EO97, respectively) form micelles with a PPO core and a PEO corona. READ MORE

3. Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Properties of Nonionic Surfactant Membranes
Abstract : An extensive investigation of the multilamellar vesicles (La*), lamellar (La), and multiply connected sponge (L3) phase formed in surfactant systems is presented in this thesis. These membrane structures were studied using surfactant systems containing poly(oxyethylene) alkyl ethers, n-CnH2n+1(OCH2CH2) mOH, commonly abbreviated as CnEm. READ MORE

4. A scattering study of concentrated lens protein solutions and mixtures - Towards understanding the molecular origin of presbyopia
Abstract : Healthy eye lenses are transparent and flexible, able to adapt shape in order to focus on far away and close-by objects. With age, however, this flexibility is lost, leading to a condition known as presbyopia. This vision disorder where close-by objects appear blurred commonly starts around the age of 40. READ MORE

5. Structural Changes in Nonionic Surfactant Systems
Abstract : In this thesis we have studied structural changes of a nonionic surfactant self-assembly, as governed by changes in temperature and concentration. The techniques used in experimental investigations were dynamic and static light scattering, nuclear magnetic resonance and cryo-transmission electron microscopy (using a novel specimen preparation protocol).
