  1. 1. Statistical Methods for Taxon Classification and Bird Migration Phenology

    Author : Måns Karlsson; Ola Hössjer; Jonas Knape; Benjamin Bolker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Classification; quantile regression; phenology; statistical ornithology; L-functionals; set-valued classification; species identification; statistical ecology; multispecies modelling; matematisk statistik; Mathematical Statistics;

    Abstract : The connection between ecology and statistics is deep. Methodological advancement in statistics open up new possibilities to understand the distribution of life on earth, and research questions in ecology cause new statistical methods to be developed. READ MORE

  2. 2. Understanding Weather effects on, in, and from large Herbivore Population Dynamics

    Author : Lena Månsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; monitoring; management; data collection; Ecology; Ekologi; indirect effects; vegetation; modeling; time series analysis; precipitation; weather; population dynamics; Large herbivores;

    Abstract : Large herbivores are monitored for various reasons in many areas around the world. Data from such monitoring can be of varying degree of detail and extent. Several studies have shown that we need extensive amounts of data with a high degree of detail to be able to understand anything from it. READ MORE

  3. 3. Modelling spatial and temporal species distribution in the Baltic Sea phytobenthic zone

    Author : Antonia Nyström Sandman; Hans Kautsky; Martin Isaeus; Georg Martin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; species distribution modelling; niche; gradient; prediction; environmental factors; phytobenthos; scale; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Statistical modelling is often used to relate the presence or abundance of species to environmental predictors, thereby providing a basis for predictive mapping of species or biodiversity. The variables included must thus be relevant and reflect actual changes in the environment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Quantitative conservation genetics of the rare plants Scabiosa canescens (Dipsacaceae) and Silene diclinis (Caryophyllaceae)

    Author : Patrik Waldmann; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; conservation biology; quantitative genetics; Scabiosa canescens; Silene diclinis; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns quantitative genetic aspects of the conservation biology of two rare plants, Scabiosa canescens and Silene diclinis. Particular attention was given to the effects of genetic drift on the structuring of variation in allozymes and quantitative characters, the association between (current) population size and quantitative genetic variation, the level of inbreeding depression in fitness characters and morphology in a small, isolated population, and the effect of inbreeding and intraspecific hybridization on developmental instability. 5. 5. Connections between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in large-scale natural ecosystems

    Author : James Hagan; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biodiversity; ecology; ecosystem function; ecosystem process;

    Abstract : Billions of years of evolution have given us a planet that supports a remarkable diversity of life. Estimates for the number of Eukaryotic species frequently number in the millions and the Prokaryotes are much more diverse than that. This biodiversity makes up the ecosystems that we, as humans, rely on to sustain almost every aspect of our lives. READ MORE
