1. Nonparametric tests for comparing two treatments by using ordinal data
Abstract : This thesis concerns four nonparametric tests for comparing two treatments in a randomized controlled clinical trial when the main response variable generates discrete or continuous ordinal data and measurements are made at baseline and follow-up. In the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test (WMW) the baseline values are not taken into account at all, but in the other three tests both baseline and follow-up values are used. READ MORE

2. On Rank-invariant Methods for Ordinal Data
Abstract : Data from rating scale assessments have rank-invariant properties only, which means that the data represent an ordering, but lack of standardized magnitude, inter-categorical distances, and linearity. Even though the judgments often are coded by natural numbers they are not really metric. READ MORE

3. Toward Sequential Data Assimilation for NWP Models Using Kalman Filter Tools
Abstract : The aim of the meteorological data assimilation is to provide an initial field for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and to sequentially update the knowledge about it using available observations. Kalman filtering is a robust technique for the sequential estimation of the unobservable model state based on the linear regression concept. READ MORE

4. Development and Evaluation of Nonparametric Mixed Effects Models
Abstract : A nonparametric population approach is now accessible to a more comprehensive network of modelers given its recent implementation into the popular NONMEM application, previously limited in scope by standard parametric approaches for the analysis of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data. The aim of this thesis was to assess the relative merits and downsides of nonparametric models in a nonlinear mixed effects framework in comparison with a set of parametric models developed in NONMEM based on real datasets and when applied to simple experimental settings, and to develop new diagnostic tools adapted to nonparametric models. 5. Monotonic and Semiparametric Regression for the Detection of Trends in Environmental Quality Data
Abstract : Natural fluctuations in the state of the environment can long conceal or distort important trends in the human impact on our ecosystems. Accordingly, there is increasing interest in statistical normalisation techniques that can clarify the anthropogenic effects by removing meteorologically driven fluctuations and other natural variation in time series of environmental quality data.
