6. A study of the stereochemistry and electronic transitions of cyclic and acyclic thioamides by crystallography, spectroscopy and computational methods
Abstract : Analysis of conformations and electron transitions of 3-(alkyl or aralkyl)-5-(methyl or phenyl)rhodanines with analogues and N,N'-bis[(S)-1-phenylethyl]-thiourea have been performed by X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR, molecular mechanics, ultraviolet spectroscopy and for the chiral rhodanines, enantiomer chromatography and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The magnitude of rotational barriers has been determined. READ MORE

7. Synthesis and Structure of Novel G-Protein Coupled Receptor Ligands
Abstract : A method based on h6-arenetricarbonylchromium chemistry has been developed for the synthesis of enantiopure 4-alkylated 3-(dipropylamino)chromans. The stereochemistry of these new serotonergic ligands was determined by a combination of X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy and chemical correlation. READ MORE

8. Studies on Palladium-Catalyzed Carbocyclizations of Allene-Substituted Olefins and 1,3-Dienes
Abstract : This thesis describes the development and mechanistic studies of carbocyclization reactions of allene-substituted olefins and 1,3-dienes, catalyzed by palladium(0) and palladium(II). These reactions results in the formation of [n,3,0] bicyclic systems (n = 3-5) with high stereoselectivity and in good to excellent yields. READ MORE

9. Cyclic sulfamides as HIV-1 protease inhibitors : Synthesis, X-ray structure analysis and structure-activity relationship
Abstract : Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the causative agent of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Inhibition of HIV-1 protease leads to immature and non-infectious viral particles. The synthesis of a number of cyclic HIV-1 protease inhibitors and the subsequent evaluation in an enzyme assay is presented in this thesis. READ MORE

10. Mechanisms for Solvolytic Elimination and Substitution Reactions Involving Short-lived Carbocation Intermediates
Abstract : Solvolysis reactions of a range of tertiary substrates in largely aqueous solvents were studied in such respects as β-deuterium kinetic isotope effects, linear free energy relationships and stereochemistry.Solvolysis of the fluorene derivatives 9-methyl–9-(2´-X-2´-propyl)fluorene (1-X, X = Cl, Br, OOCCF3) involves a very short-lived carbocation intermediate.
