  1. 1. Morphometrical Methodology in Quantification of Biological Tissue Components

    Author : Bo Blomgren; Godfried Roomans; Christian Falconer; Marita Hilliges; Steven Campbell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bildanalys; Morphometry; Stereology; Image analysis; histology; Bildanalys; Image analysis; Bildanalys;

    Abstract : Objective:To develop and validate computer-assisted morphometrical methods, based on stereological theory, in order to facilitate the analysis and quantitative measurements of biological tissue components.Material and methods:Biopsy specimens from the vaginal wall or from the vestibulum vaginae of healthy women, or from women suffering from incontinence or vestibulitis were used. 2. 2. Giant Cell Arteritis - Pathogenetic and Epidemiological Aspects

    Author : Karolina Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; giant cell arteritis; temporal arteritis; polymyalgia rheumatica; estrogen; MxA-protein; IFN type 1; Stereology; Neovascularization; immunocytochemistry;

    Abstract : Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of medium-size and large arteries which affects people aged 50 years or older with a female preponderance. The two different expressions of GCA are temporal arteritis (TA) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). READ MORE

  3. 3. Experimental Stroke and Neurotrophins: Regulation, function and gene transfer of neurotrophins in rat and mouse models of focal cerebral ischemia

    Author : Gunnar Andsberg; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; Neurology; animal behaviour; striatum; stereology; immunohistochemistry; focal cerebral ischemia; nerve growth factors; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Stroke caused by focal cerebral ischemia is a major cause of death and neurological disability in humans. The forebrain region most commonly affected by ischemic incidents is that supplied by the middle cerebral artery. READ MORE

  4. 4. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    Author : Andreas Arvidsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stereology; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; BrdU; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; subventricular zone; striatum; dentate gyrus; neuronal replacement; neuronal survival; Focal cerebral ischemia; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor;

    Abstract : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 5. 5. Grain Morphology and Intergranular Structure of Si3N4 and Al2O3 Based Ceramics

    Author : Håkan Björklund; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; whiskers; stereology; electron microscopy; sintering; silicon nitride; quantitative microscopy; grain growth; ceramics; microstructure; aluminium oxide;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns factors controlling the grain morphology in Si3N4 and Al2O3 based ceramics. The microstructures of the ceramics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy in combination with quantitative microscopy and stereologic methods. READ MORE
