  1. 21. Xanthophyll Cycle in the Light of Thylakoid Membrane Lipids - Membrane Packing, Curvature Elastic Stress and Enzyme Binding

    Author : Anna Szilagyi; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; steroider; Lipids; steroids; membranes; Lipider; enzymologi; HPLC; laurdan; fluorescence spectroscopy; Proteins; enzymology; Proteiner; curvature elastic stress; enzyme binding; thylakoid membrane; membrane fluidity; lipid packing; histidine; VDE; zeaxanthin; xanthophyll cycle; mebran;

    Abstract : The xanthophyll cycle involves the light-dependent and reversible conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin. The enzyme, violaxanthin de-epoxidase (VDE) catalyses the conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin, via the intermediate antheraxanthin. VDE is a membrane-hosted enzyme during its activity. 2. 22. Effects of neuroactive steroids on the recombinant GABAA receptor in Xenopus oocyte

    Author : Mozibur Rahman; Ming-De Wang; Bjarke Ebert; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; GABA; GABAA receptor; neuroactive steroids; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Obstetrik och gynekologi;

    Abstract : Introduction: Neuroactive steroids represent a class of both synthetic and naturally occurring steroids that have an effect on neural function. In addition to classical genomic mechanism by the hormones progesterone, deoxycorticosterone and testosterone 3α-OH metabolites of these hormones enhance GABAA receptor through rapid non-genomic mechanism. 3. 23. Characteristics and Consequences of Use of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids in Poly Substance Abuse

    Author : Anna Petersson; Ingemar Thiblin; Harrison G Pope Jr; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anabolic steroids; Crime; morbidity; mortality; substance abuse; Forensic medicine; Rättsmedicin;

    Abstract : The use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) has been associated with use of illegal or unprescribed prescription drugs, as well as different adverse psychiatric effects, such as ma-nia, psychosis and hostility. Further, there is an association between use of AAS and other different risk behaviours, including carrying guns and reckless driving. READ MORE

    Author : Marie Bixo; Bengt Winblad; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Progesterone; 5a-pregnane-3.20-dione; estradiol; testosterone; rat brain; human brain; PMSG-model; steroid anaesthesia;

    Abstract : Ovarian steroid hormones are known to produce several different effects in the brain. In addition to their role in gonadotropin release, ovulation and sexual behaviour they also seem to affect mood and emotions, as shown in women with the premenstrual tension syndrome. Some steroids have the ability to affect brain excitability. READ MORE
