1. Gait strategy in myelomeningocele : movements, mechanics and methods
Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to describe the movement patterns employed in self-ambulatory children with a range of muscle paresis due to nervous tissue damage resulting from myelomeningocele, a common congenital malformation of the spinal column resulting in sensory and motor paresis. Using 3D movement analysis, the upper and lower body kinematics, movement of the center of mass, and joint moments, powers, and work done during gait in 32 children with lumbo-sacral myelomeningocele were analyzed and divided into 5 groups based on the severity of paresis. 2. Protected Lignin Biorefining: Fundamental Insights on Lignin Reactivity
Abstract : The potential to utilize lignin, which constitutes as much as 15-30% of the biomass, needs further evaluation. In the transition towards a bioeconomy, lignin has the potential to replace fossil-based phenols. Attempts to valorize the available technical lignins are ongoing; however, that lignin suffers from molecular heterogeneity. READ MORE

5. Advancing the life cycle energy optimisation methodology
Abstract : The Life Cycle Energy Optimisation (LCEO) methodology aims at finding a design solution that uses a minimum amount of cumulative energy demand over the different phases of the vehicle's life cycle, while complying with a set of functional constraints. This effectively balances trade-offs, and therewith avoids sub-optimal shifting between the energy demand for the cradle-to-production of materials, operation of the vehicle, and end-of-life phases.
