1. The effect of scale on the morphology, mechanics and transmissivity of single rock fractures
Abstract : This thesis investigates the effect of scale on themorphology, mechanics and transmissivity of single rockfractures using both laboratory and in-situ experiments, aswell as numerical simulations. Using a laboratory 3D laserscanner, the surface topography of a large silicon-rubberfracture replica of size 1m x 1m, as well as the topography ofboth surfaces of several high-strength concrete fracturereplicas varying in size from 50mmx50mm to 200mm x 200mm, werescanned. 2. Shear Behaviour of Adhesive Layers
Abstract : An experimental method to determine the complete stress versus deformation relation for a thin adhesive layer loaded in shear is presented. The work is based on a classical specimen geometry, i.e. the end-notch flexure specimen (ENF-specimen) and the experiments are evaluated based on an inverse method. READ MORE

3. Modelling of Transport Processes Involved in Service Life Prediction of Concrete : Important Principles
Abstract : The main focus in this licentiate thesis is a description of the environmentally introduced action of diffusing and chemically reactive (e.g. carbonation and chemical-physical adsorption-desorption) matter in the pore solution and in the air-filled space in the pore system of the material. 4. Strength and deformability of fractured rocks
Abstract : This thesis presents a systematic numerical modeling framework to simulate the stress-deformation and coupled stress-deformation-flow processes by performing uniaxial and biaxial compressive tests on fractured rock models with considering the effects of different loading conditions, different loading directions (anisotropy), and coupled hydro-mechanical processes for evaluating strength and deformability behavior of fractured rocks. By using code UDEC of discrete element method (DEM), a series of numerical experiments were conducted on discrete fracture network models (DFN) at an established representative elementary volume (REV), based on realistic geometrical and mechanical data of fracture systems from field mapping at Sellafield, UK. 5. Constitutive Behaviour and Fracture of Adhesive Layers : Inverse Methods and Energetic Balance
Abstract : In the automobile industry, current demands on reduced emissions with maintained or even increased crash worthiness, forces the industry to seek weight-reducing designs. The possibility to use lightweight materials is obviously attractive. At joints, these lightweight materials have to be connected to high-strength or low-cost materials. READ MORE
