  1. 1. Seeing the invisible: Evolution of wing interference patterns in Hymenoptera, and their application in taxonomy

    Author : Ekaterina Shevtsova; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chalcidoidea; parasitic wasps; structural colors; visual signaling; cryptic species; sexual dimorphism; wing membrane thickness; wing micro-morphology; wing cuticle ultrastructure;

    Abstract : The remarkably thin transparent wing membranes in tiny wasps may appear to have a simple structural design, but hide a largely unexplored complex of micro-morphological features that serve aerodynamics and may also function in visual signaling. I found that when such small transparent wings are viewed against a dark background they display vivid structural color patterns due to thin film interference, and named them Wing Interference Patterns (WIPs). 2. 2. WO3 for reflective displays in color

    Author : Marika Gugole; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; NATURAL SCIENCES; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; reflective displays; electrochromism; plasmonic metasurfaces; structural colors;

    Abstract : Reflective displays, also known as electronic paper, are very attractive due to their low power consumption and great visibility under bright ambient light conditions. However, reflective displays in color are still limited on the market for two main reasons. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Visible and the Invisible : Color Contrast Phenomena in Space

    Author : Gertrud Olsson; Jadwiga Krupinska; Henrik Oxvig; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; HUMANIORA; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANITIES; color in architecture; color theory; color phenomena; simultaneous contrast; simultané; afterimage; transparency; material and immaterial; color mixture; light-colors; Art; Konstvetenskap; Architecture; Arkitektur;

    Abstract : This study deals with the changes in color that arise in space, primarily simultaneous contrast in three dimensions. The typical account of simultaneous contrast is that the contrast phenomenon occurs between two or more color surfaces seen together, thus affecting one another. READ MORE

  4. 4. Unveiling the nature of blue compact galaxies

    Author : Genoveva Micheva; Göran Östlin; Evan Skillman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; blue compact galaxies; starbursts; host galaxy; stellar populations; surface photometry; optical and NIR broadband; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Blue compact galaxies (BCGs) are gas-rich star-forming low redshift galaxies with low metallicities. In some cases the relative strength of the starburst can be so high that it completely dominates the light output of the galaxy, an obstacle which has been countered by deeper optical imaging data and observations in the near infra-red (NIR) regime. 5. 5. Proximity in chromatin : opportunities for innovations

    Author : Samer Yammine; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Mammalian chromosomes extensively communicate with each other via long-range chromatin interactions. These interactions are mostly mediated by proteins, which work as teams to control genes in the cells. These interactions could also help to unravel the mechanisms of diseases such as cancer, from new perspectives. READ MORE
