16. Worse than Complex
Abstract : This thesis engages with questions on the boundary between what has traditionally been understood as social and natural. The introductory essay contextualizes the specific contributions of the included papers, by noting and exploring a reinvigoration of "naturalism" (the notion of a continuity between the human realm and the rest of natural phenomena) under the banner of Complexity Science. 17. The acquisition of contrast : a longitudinal investigation of initial s+plosive cluster development in Swedish children
Abstract : This Thesis explores the development of word-initial s+plosive consonant clusters in the speech of Swedish children between the ages of 1;6 and 4;6. Development in the word-initial consonant clusters is viewed as being determined by 1) the children’s ability to articulate the target sequence of consonants, 2) the level of understanding of which acoustic features in the adult model production are significant for the signalling of the intended distinction, and 3) the children’s ability to apply established production patterns only to productions where the acquired feature agrees with the adult target, to achieve a contrast between rival output forms. 18. Interaction strength and responses of ecological communities to disturbances
Abstract : Ecological communities are continuously exposed to natural or anthropogenic disturbances of varied intensity and frequency. The way communities respond to disturbances can depend on various factors, such as number of species, structural characteristics of the community, stability properties, species characteristics and the nature of the disturbance. 19. Meaning and Action in Sustainability Science : Interpretive approaches for social-ecological systems research
Abstract : Social-ecological systems research is interventionist by nature. As a subset of sustainability science, social-ecological systems research aims to generate knowledge and introduce concepts that will bring about transformation. Yet scientific concepts diverge in innumerable ways when they are put to work in the world. READ MORE

20. Lessons Learned in Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges Using Advanced Sensor Technology
Abstract : Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) with emerging technologies like e.g. fibre optic sensors, lasers, radars, acoustic emission and Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) made an entrance into the civil engineering field in last decades. Expansion of new technologies together with development in data communication benefited for rapid development. READ MORE
