1. Biomimetic Formation of Calcium Phosphate Based Nanomaterials
Abstract : The intercellular material in bone is a nanocomposite of aligned “hard” inorganics—calcium phosphate (CaP) platelets embedded in the long-range ordered “soft” organic collagen matrix. This elaborate structural arrangement redeems the weaknesses of the individual components (being soft protein or brittle mineral) and gives bone its excellent mechanical properties for the protection and support of our bodies. 2. Corrosion of steel bars in fibre reinforced concrete: corrosion mechanisms and structural performance
Abstract : The viability of employing fibre reinforcement to improve the durability performance of RC structures by delaying and/or reducing rebar corrosion and by mitigating the structural impact of corrosion-induced damage have been investigated. Given the enhanced crack control of FRC, it could be advantageous to use fibres in civil engineering structures to decrease the ingress of corrosion-initiation substances. READ MORE

3. Atoms in Lithiated Carbon Fibres
Abstract : Carbon fibres are key constituents of structural batteries, in which electrochemical energy storage and mechanical load bearing are merged in one multifunctional device. Here carbon fibres simultaneously act as structural reinforcement by carrying load and as battery electrode by hosting lithium (Li)-ions in its microstructure. READ MORE

4. Engineering of lignin in wood towards functional materials
Abstract : Through 270 million years of evolution, the finely tuned hierarchical structure of wood has been optimized for efficient nutrient transport and exceptional mechanical stability. Its distinctive orthotropic constitution can provide inspiration and design opportunities for the development of novel functional materials. READ MORE

5. Characterisation of a structural battery composite and its constituents
Abstract : The structural battery composite is a recently successfully developed multifunctional lithium-ion battery. It is safer and capable to carry mechanical load compared to commercially available liquid electrolyte batteries. READ MORE
