  1. 1. Squat defects and rolling contact fatigue clusters - Numerical investigations of rail and wheel deterioration mechanisms

    Author : Robin Andersson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; rail surface irregularities; rolling contact fatigue clusters; dynamic vehicle–track interaction; rolling contact fatigue; studs; squats; fracture mechanics;

    Abstract : Squat defects, a type of localised rolling contact fatigue damage appearing on rail surfaces with rail break as an ultimate consequence, have concerned infrastructure managers for the last couple of decades. In recent years similar types of defects—so-called studs—that are visually resembling squats, have started to appear. READ MORE

  3. 3. Thin-walled steel studs in fire : analysis and design recommendations

    Author : Peter Karlström; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Steel Structures; Stålbyggnad;

    Abstract : Development of steel frame modular buildings is gaining increased popularity and support throughout Europe. Due to flexibility in construction and good long-term performance, lightweight steel frame structures are often preferred solutions, for instance in partitions and suspended ceilings as well as for load-bearing elements. 4. 4. Composite Bridges : Innovative ways of achieving composite action

    Author : Robert Hällmark; Peter Collin; Ian May; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Composite action; bridges; steel; concrete; shear connectors; prefabrication; coiled spring pins; shear studs; post-installation; design guidance; Structural Engineering; Konstruktionsteknik;

    Abstract : The topic of this thesis is steel-concrete composite bridges and innovative ways of achieving composite action. The typical superstructure consists of three main components: the steel girders, the concrete deck slab and the shear connectors. READ MORE

  5. 5. Moisture-induced distortion in timber structures - examples based on partition walls

    Author : Magnus Bäckström; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; gypsum wallboard; spiral grain angle; restraint; Norway spruce; Connection; twist; spring;

    Abstract : The shape of timber changes due to variations in moisture content (MC). In Scandinavia, producers normally dry timber to an MC of 18%. However, after the studs are built into the wall structure, for example, they may become distorted as a result of further drying in the structure. The final MC in a heated building in Scandinavia is about 8%. READ MORE
